engine swap

Hey everyone,
I have an 89 f150 w/ a 5.0 and automatic tranny. I'm looking to get another engine to rebuild and drop into it. What is the biggest newest engine I can drop in easily and will it mate up to the tranny? Or if I got an engine with a tranny will it match up with the transfew case? thanks everyone.

The 4.6/5.4 would be expensive because you would need to replace the engine/transmission and possibly the transfer case as well as rewire the truck for a new CPU. It would be easier to put an aftermarket diesel in.

Physically you could put a 351 in there. It has the same bolt pattern for the bell housing on the transmission and the same engine mounts. You will also need a new flywheel. You will need a new exhaust if you do not have duel exhaust, as the Y pipe will need to be a little wider. You may also have CPU issues - I am not sure about the computer hookups.

For the pain and frustration of a engine swap you can throw a few $$ more at a 5.0 to get it to pump out more HP (stroke and bore, increase compression, cams, windage tray, blower, etc.). The 302 engine has a vast aftermarket of performance parts - the 351 doesn’t have quite as much for it. Swapping engines is not as easy as it was 20 years ago...

Alright, so I think we'll stick with the 302. I see alot of stuff out there says for 302 mustang, is it all interchangeable? How much HP do you think we can get out of a decent 302. Probably wont go top of the line with everything, but not crap parts either. Thanks

ford sales a stroked 302 that comes out to 347 ci for around $2500 , top it off with some gt-40 iron heads for around $600 and get a some 24 lb injectors for $200 and a custom chip for around $300 to 350. an easy 300 to 325 hp motor and everything you have bolts up. kit also requires a cam $200
or do a rebuild and add a aftermarket supercharger for about the price.

The 302 in a Mustang is built for more power higher up in the RPM range. This is partly because of the performance nature of the car and the weight that it has to push. For a truck you want the power lower in the RPM range. I recomend stroking the 302 with a cam that develops power earlier in the RPM range. If you want to run 89 octane gas or less keep the compression below 10:1. Higher comperession will require a higher octane to keep it from pinging.

Headers, oil pan windage tray, roller rockers. and tricked out heads will all improve HP/performance. Do your research for the rebuild on what performance gains can help the most and for what cost. You might find that building a low compression engine for a supercharger may be the way to go.

Good Luck,

T
