NEED HELP (codes & problems) please

Yesterday I started getting a Stumble/Miss-Fire type of shaking @ 1500 RPMs under load on my 5.4L

Today I ran the codes (I NEVER got a Check engine light) ....and I got P0118 & P0320

Now, I have done a Tune-up recently (plugs,filters,etc..) and has been running GREAT

I have 120,000 miles on my 1999 superduty

The P0118 is Engine Coolant Circuit * High input

The P0320 is the IGN/DIST Engine Speed Input Malfunction

CAN Those items Cause my problem ??

And how do I repair them ??

Please Help me

Thank you all for your help ....

Jon

Sounds like you have a ruptured PCV elbow. Check that first. Follow the PCV hard hose back behind the manifold. It connects with a boot. You can get the PCV assembly from the dealer $20-$25.

The codes are history codes since your CEL did not illuminate. Those are stored when malfunction is found during a drive cycle. Neither will cause a stumble or erratic idle. Disconnect the negative battery cable for a couple of minutes and the ECM memory will start fresh.

Jon,

Check the connection to the Crank sensor. Make sure it is properly connected. The 320 code means that the PCM did not receive 2 consecutive pulses from this sensor. This can cause the problem you described. The 118 code can be casued by a short to power on the CHT, a poor connection to the sensor, deffective PCM or a damaged sensor. Do you have a 2 way radio in your truck? Improper installation can set the 320 code.

Thank you guys VERY much

I have checked the PCV after doing some searching on here ..that was fine

Now, I can't find the dang Crank sensor

I was laying in a foot of snow looking for it , then above the engine ......dang thing isn't there

I even have a diagram of where it 'should' be

I do not have a 2way Radio

Darn EFI...I can build a 10 second N/a Mustang but I can't find a simple sensor

If I get the truck at 1500rpms in OD ..and slowly push down the throttle.....it bucks/stumbles/hesitates like mad (it will do it everytime I try)

Thanks again guys and keep the info coming

Found it !@#$!@#%

lol

I unpluged it and pluged it in with a nice CLICK

No idea if that will do anything ..... I highly doubt it

Should I just replace it?

I play off road in the mud/water/sand. All the connectors in the engine compartment have dielectric grease. Keeps the connections clean.

So Jean,

Should I replace that sensor?

Or should I just ignore the stumble and see if a new code shows up? (I cleared them)

thanks

Unhappy 1999 f150 How to get Engine Codes?

My 1999 F150 just started doing the same thing yesterday. Rattle, Shake, etc under approx 2000 rpm, mostly just on easy acceleration or load. I believe it is a coil also, but I don't know how to test them. I had one go bad about 1 1/2 ago, and seems like it felt about the same. Had a shop repair it, which took several hours following "normal" diagnostic procedures. Is there a way to test the coil on my own? and check Engine codes, the light came on with in a short time of starting to notice bad running engine. Engine light also started flashing on the drive home, but then quit flashing and just stayed on.

In trying to diagnose this problem my self, I pulled plug on one injector at a time, and I think I have located the bad cylinder/coil/injector. Rear on passengers side. I just don't know how to check whether it is the coil or the injector.

Thanks for any help!

I can see clogged injectors causing the sluggishness, but no misfire codes on the coils....Odd, but using a scanner, you can see those things. Glad it's fixed.

You would need to have the code pulled using an OBDII reader. Most shops would have one and Autozone will pull the code for free. If the coil on #4 (rear passenger) is out again, you will have a code P0304. #4 coil has been known to fail from a leaking heater hose.

PS flashing CEL means you could be doing damage to the catalyst system. Too much gas isn't being burned.
