Throttle,
I think your right , I'm gonna have to go to the stealership soon.
I think I'll try what WMCNALLY suggested , maybe I do have a leaking intake gasket it's easy enough to check.
I'll report back when I find the problem

Thanks for the input

The service manual shows one sensor just after the cat before the muffler on the top of the pipe , but it's not there, no wire either.
I read some place that some models don't test the emissions after the cat but that's not what my service manual shows.
Does anyone have any more info on this ?

Thanks for your help !
Hi Syncmaster, I know it's been a really long time but I have a 1998 extended e350 clubwagon and just got my catalytic converter stolen. I'm having problems people believing me that I can not find anything electrical at the rear cat for a oxygen sensor. Is that what you found years ago?

Syncmaster hasn't logged in for over 6 years.

Some 1998 E350's do not have a rear sensor, just the 2 front sensors. I believe it depends on the vehicle GVWR, over 8500# has a different emission system and doesn't require post-cat sensors.

It's a bit more than that.

Vehicles > 8500 GVWR AND with "Federal" emissions did not have downstream O2 sensors as they were calibrated to only OBD1 standards. Vehicles > 8500 with "California" or "OBDII" emissions had downstream O2 sensors (and more).
