I need to replace my O2 sensor on the right side of my 98 4.2 XLT, and Im wondering if anyone knows what tool I need to use or is there some other trick to getting them out?

The socket size is 22mm. I use a 22mm open end wrench. If you cut the plug off a box wrench will fit over it. Penetrating oil, not WD40, will also help. When you install the new one do not forget the anti-seize.

I had to do my passenger side also. Take the wheel off then remove the piece of rubber on the wheel well just over the brake assembly. I used a wrench to get the sensor off. It was pretty easy to do, just a little elbow grease getting the wrench to turn at first. Like mentioned before, dont forget the anti sieze when installing the new one. Now Im thinking about doing the other side to help my milage more. Ive put about 45 miles on my truck since I replaced it yesterday and no engine light yet so Im guessing I did it right. Good luck with yours.

What is this anti-seize stuff that you put on before you install the oxygen sensor? And what exactly is it for? I have to replace the front driver side one and want to get it done right the first time.

The Anti-Sieze will prevent the o2 sensor from getting stuck in the hole for good. Over time the o2 sensor will rust and it could rust so bad you'll never get it out again.. Anti-Sieze will prevent that from happening.
