P0301 misfire

I just scanned my neighbor's 99 Expedition with the 5.4L and got a P0301 cylinder 1 misfire detected code.

which side of the engine is cylinder 1 located on, driver's side or passenger. I assume cylinder 1 is the first one in the bank.

Does this code usually point to a coil pack or spark plug. If not, what else could it be?

Her husband and I, looked under the hood and from up above, I could not see any coil packs, plugs or anything. Do you have to see this stuff from underneath the vehicle? It was dark and cold so we didn't want to get underneath the truck at the time.

Does this year 5.4L have individual coil packs for each cylinder?.

Sorry if these questions seem ignorant but I'm not very familiar with this engine as I drive Chevys. Her husband would like to try and fix this himself, so I'm trying to gather some info for him. Thanks.

cylinder 1 should be passenger side, front of the engine.

The 5.4L has coil packs, look just under the fuel rail, and you should see black rubber looking things with a green and white (or maybe yellow and white) sticker on it. They are each secured with a 7mm screw, and have a set of wires going to each pack.

If you want to take a look at the spark plug, just take out the 7mm bolt, unplug the wire connector, pull the coil pack out, then you can use your sockets to remove the spark plug.

You can use the search function to find out more. Luckily that plug is probably the easiest to get to.

johngs,
Thank you for the info. Are you saying that the coil pack is more toward the top of the engine instead of underneath? I remember seeing the fuel rails which were on the inner sides of the valve covers. It was dark and we were using a flashlight so I didn't really get a good look at the engine. Thanks again.

yes they are on top. The spark plugs are underneath them. You will need a spark plug socket with a fairly long extension. It's a good ways in there.

Just look near the injectors (yellow and black plastic), you should be able to spot them from there. They are black, with a sticker on top, round, and about an inch and a half or so in diameter.

Check out that page, the two videos in the middle of the screen show you how to remove them. This was on a lightning truck, but the method for removing the coil packs and plugs is the same. Will be in the same location as well.

johngs,
Thanks again for all of your help. I know where to look now. It doesn't sound like too bad of a job. Thanks also for that link.
