coil pack replacement

My neighbor has a 99 expedition with the 5.4L. She took it to a local repair shop because her check engine light has been coming on periodically. They told her it was a bad coil pack but they could not determine which one and told her to bring it back when the check engine light came on and stayed on so they could pinpoint the bad coil. I'm not very familiar with Fords so here are some questions.

1. How do you determine which coil pack is bad? I find it hard to believe that the shop can determine that a coil pack is bad but cannot tell which one it is.

2. How hard is it to replace one of these coil packs?

3. How much do these coil packs cost and is it better to get OEM ford coil?

4. The shop wants about $300 for the coil and to install it. Is this a fair price?

The shop thinks it is probably one of the back coil packs since they said these are the ones that usually go out first. I told her that I would try to get some info to see if the shop knows what they are talking about.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined and told her I could probably replace the coil for her if I could determine which coil pack is bad. I also have the new EZ-Scan 6000 AutoXray scanner which should be able to determine what code was stored in the computer if the shop didn't reset it.

Thanks for any information you can give me.

This thread seems to indicate you can get one for $50 or $60.

The engine code reader should indicate which cylinder is the problem. Autozone has readers as well. They will do the reading for free. If you catch the right auction on eBay, I have seen new coil packs go for as little as $25. They are not that hard to change.

As the others said, you should be able to go to autozone and get the code pulled from there and it should tell you which cylinder is misfiring (I just noticed you said you already have a scanner so forget the autozone thing).

Our computers should store the codes they get, so unless they reset the computer, you should still be able to get the reading.

$300 is too much.

The pack costs (as already mentioned) $50 to $60, and should be no more than a 25 minute job (remove a 7mm bolt that is pretty easily accessable depending on which cylinder, unplug coil pack wire, remove coil pack, insert new coil pack, plug back in, re-insert bolt).

Do it yourself.

Guys,
Thanks for the replies. It sounds like its a pretty easy job to replace one. I will put her truck on my scanner and see what it says. I'll tell here its okay to buy an aftermarket coil.

This engine is not supercharged, its just a regular 5.4 in an expedition. Thanks again.
