PCV Valve Replacement
PCV Valve Replacement
Ok, I'm not a mechanic or anyting but does anyone have any good suggestions/tips or photos or links to replacing a pcv valve on a '99 F-150 5.4L? Heck in the old days it was REAL easy.......but not any more!
Thanks a lot.....any help or comments would be greatly appreciated!!

You have the same year and engine that I have...
I think replacing the PCV valve should be easy, its just hiding amoungst all those coil packs.
Did you already get the replacement PCV valve?

I changed mine when I was changing the plugs in my 99 5.4L. I don't remember here it was, but once I pulled the power steering pump out of the way and the plastic engine cover, it was obvious and easy to get to.
its real easy you just pull it up out of the valve cover and you might have to twist it a little to break it loose from the fitting its connected to. Snap in the new one and place back in the valve cover.

I just did mine on the same year and engine as you and it took less than 45 seconds from start to finish!
it is on the passenger side valve cover and has one hose attached to it. just pull it straight up then dissconnect the hose, push the hose onto the new valve then push the valve back into its grommet in the valve cover

yeah your right, it only took about 45 seconds!!! Someone told me that it was in a hard place to get to......it didn't have anything in the way......my replacement one had a new grommet so I changed that also....
Now if I can just find where my small oil leak is coming from.......it leave about a 1/2" dia. oil spot everywhere!!! It looks like a rear main but I don't think thats it......
I believe on the drivers side valve cover is just a check valve? I could be wrong if anyone else knows what it is?

Sounds like you have my oil leak also. Its somewhere on the rear of the engine but I have not looked for it. It seems to run down to the transmission torque converter houseing and drip off of it.
it sounds like you all have the very very common head gasket leak.
take a flashlight lay on the ground under your truck and look up at your engine and you will see that the oil is coming from the passenger side head where it meets the block.
do a search on this board and you will find thousands of posts on it.
if your oil is leaking bad enough to hit the ground it is time to have the gaskets (yes both sides) replaced

I want to suggest to people changing the pcv valve on 5.4's, to not only change the valve, but change out the pcv tube and rubber elbow where it connects to the back of the throttle body.
It is VERY common for that rubber elbow to rot and start leaking vacuum , this will throw an engine code.
This usually happens around 100K miles. My wifes 5.4 Expy made it to 117k miles before this happened and my friends 5.4 Navigator made 110k .
The PCV assembly is about 18 bucks from Ford.

If I change out the tubing, can I get it in colors other than black?
I assume it has to be oil resistant and meet certain heat requirements.
Clear tubing would also be interesting so I could see if any oil is being sucked up into the throttle body.
