Fuel Filter tool

Got a '98 4.6 2WD. Went to change the fuel filter and neither the 3/8" or 5/16" disconnect tools work. Both are too big. On my existing filter. There are two different sizes needed to remove it. I cant figure it out. Also, the new filter i bought has the same size ends for installation. Please help. Thanks in advance.

From: oak harbor, wa / brookings, or
got my tool from napa.

the trick is,

first remove the metal retainer clips and slide them as far down the flex hose that you can.

then move the hose up and down the tube as far as you can to loosen things up.

then pull the hose as far away from the filter as you can.

then put on the correct removal tool. big one for the tank side, small one for the engine side.

push the tool as far into the coupling as you can, then holding the tool from moveing, slide the coupling on the tool as far as you can, then slide the tool as far away from the filter as you can again, while working the coupling in the same direction the tool will stop at the flange but the coupling wont.

it does work just be patient.

the pain is getting the fuel filter out of the clamp with out takeing a fuel bath. fuel + crotch = a hoping good time.

Hello staypuff,

I had a 97 2wd and the fuel filter used 3/8" tool for both ends, the same with my 2000. I don't know for sure, but if your current filter is not the OEM Ford filter, someone may have put the wrong one on. I agree with D's RIG it is a pain to get off.

alright, i finally found the right tool. it seems that the one at Discount Auto had a 5/16" and 3/8" but they were too big. It doesnt make sense. But oh well, its done now. the only problem i had was getting the old filter out of the brace that was holding it into place. It was a B%@ch. Thanks again for the help guys, i appreciate it. Have a safe and happy new years.

i cap the filter with the caps from the new filter and get it out with a flat file using a screwdriver to open up the gap a bit, just an idea for next time.
