Need performance enhancing advice
I own a 1997 4.2 4wd standard that now needs an engine replacement due to a thrown rod amongst other problems, I've found a replacement engine and would like some advice on improving the overall power and acceleration. I have a 19' boat and when pulling this boat I can tell that it's a job for this 6 cylinder. I would like to do whatever I can to accomplish this before installing the new engine. Thank you for any help that you can provide.
I get "Performance Enhancing Advice" in my e-mail box everyday! You probably do, also.
There is little you can do to boost the power of your 4.2 that will give satisfactory towing performance without spending money for power adders such as NO or a blower or charger.
A higher ratio rear axle can make up for lack of torque and power on the front end, but there are trade-offs.
Your best solution is a V-8, preferably the 5.4.
Since you may be in a situation that precludes upgrading your truck, you probably will just have to "grin and bear" it.
I went through the same thing with a 93 Explorer after I bought a larger boat a few years back, so the best of luck to you.

I agree with the lower axle ratio. I have a buddy with a 97 sc 4x2 with the 6 cyl. and a 5-speed. We pull pop-up campers all over the southeast and his does a great job. I have never asked him what ratio he has . All I know is that his truck seems to pull his 3,000 lb. camper, 3 kids and a bed full of stuff everywhere with ease. I would think that lower gears should help out a lot. Good luck, Rich
