Ok, i have a 91' F150 XLT Lariat. 5.0 302 and i know that i have the obd I computer, but i am wanting to know if there is a chip that i can put in there for more performance. One of my friends was telling me that there isnt much for mods that i can do since i have this comp. Is there n e thing out there for this thing. Thanks

There are computer mods for the older computers. Most require mechanical replacement of the PROM portion of the computer. GM has a panel you can remove to access the PROM and you can simply plug in a new one. Ford typically required a complete new computer as the PROM is an intregal part. Most of the 'chip' places swap out your stock computer for the upgraded one. ( then they upgraed your trade in and sell it to the next guy) Only obvious problem with this system is that you can't easily go from performance to stock like you can with the OBDII programmers.

so theres not much easy ways to go wth the chip ideal, so i guess im just limited wth buying new intake and the underdrive pulley and electric fan ideals. Thanks for ur input.

Cool

sleeperlover, I believe what your friend is talking about is that that you may be speed density and not Mass-Air. The speed density system doesn't like alot of major changes to the engine itself. The mass-air allows greater flexibility as the air is metered as it enters the engine and the output is checked via the oxygen sensor which tells the computer whether it needs to lean out or richen the fuel mixture. On speed density, you will have a black box on the fire wall on the passenger side of the motor with a wire connector on it. The mass-air system will have a aluminum part just after the air box that is connected inline with the air tubes going to the throttle body. For a quick check, look at your air tubes, this will also tell you the answer as the speed density systems generally have two air tubes going from air box to throttle body and the mass-air system has a single tube going to a "y" piece just before the throttle body.

Depending upon what your goals are for this motor, you can get a mass-air conversion kit for about $600 or so to convert the truck over. This will allow you to do numerous other mods to the engine and still have it run correctly once the chip is properly calibrated for your set-up. Mods that can be done a mass-air system, heads, larger throttle body, headers, exhaust, different cam, port & polish the upper intake if using the old one, stroker kits, larger fuel injectors, etc. Pretty much anything that will greatly change the air/fuel mixture. The speed density can not adapt properly to this as it only has a few fuel curves within its memory to use. The speed density systems generally can handle a K&N filter and exhaust work (cat-back), pulleys, electric fan but not much past that. As for a chip, I would suggest heading over to the computer chip section and give Mike Troyer (Superchips Distributor) a call next week or in the new year as to what you currently have and what you wish to do to the truck. He can give you all the ins and outs of what you need to do inorder to get to your goal.

Have Fun & Keep on Truckin'
Dean
