Damn Check engine light
Hey guys!! Good to see I am not the only one having this problem. I have a Torador Red 2000 F-150 XLT Flare side.
My check engine came on last week(Tuesday 11/25/03) while I was going to the movies.
1. I read my owners manual and it says that I could have gotten some bad gas and to fill it up with some higher octane gasoline and then to drive it with a mixture of interstate/city driving. Or my gas cap wasn't on tight enough. It says that if the light comes on and stays on for 4 cold start ups to take it and have it checked.
I did this and it went off, but unfortunately it came back on Saturday (11/29/03).
My truck like most of you are saying is running fine. The weird thing is that when I drive it on the interstate it goes off, but when I drive it in the city it comes back on. Weird.
My mechanic advised me to buy some stp gas treatment and put in my tank with some higher octane and then if continued to stay on after that to take it in.
I live in Clinton, MS and am on vacation next week, so I may take it in when I am off. East Ford dealer here charges $65 bucks just to put it on the machine. Sheesh!!
I am going to check out AZ and see what they can do for me.
It is just one of those annoying things that you want to go off and stay off but it won't. I had this problem about a year ago this time and seems like the cold weather has something to do with it coming on.
Thanks guys!! Happy TRUCKIN!

Stragum:
I can already tell you, I bet it's the EGR because I had a car that did that exact same thing.
Drive on the highway it's fine, as soon as I'd slow down the CEL came on until I shut off the car. This was a '92 Grand Marquis with 4.6L V8.
