Coil pack

I'd like to know what it is and where its located. I have a 00 F150 XLT Supercab only 48K miles on it. The other night my check engine light came on and driving on the freeway became worse. I took it out of o/d and it ran a little better but still shaky. But it ran fine in neutral and park. I posted this question in another forum and someone said it could be a bad coil pack. My truck is at a friends house, 45 mins away so I have no way of getting there until tomorrow night, appt w/the dealer is on tues a.m. I do have the premium ext. warranty, so I'm hoping this is covered under it. Any other advice?

Thanks!

The 4.6 and 5.4 engines for 00 came with a coil for each spark plug. If you are not sure look beside each fuel injector and you will see a rubber boot on top of the coil that is attached to the spark plug.

Normally a coil pack is what was used on the 97-98 4.6 engine. There are two of them and each fires four spark plugs.

I just fried a plug in my truck and it did the same thing. Seemed fine in neutral but when I was driving it was shaking.

Run your truck for codes and see what comes up. I had a code for misfire on cylinder #8 but the SES light did not come on... Have yet to figure that out.

My 1999 5.4L engine also has a coil pack per spark plug. I had the #4 coil pack replaced twice in 20,000 miles. There was a TSB about the heater hose leaking and dripping on the coil pack near the rear of the engine on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Have 96K on my 2001 SCrew and had a coil pack go out on me on Friday - dropped it at the dealer for replacement (along with a tuneup and oil change, plus a few repairs before my 100K warranty expires). Truck was shakin bad under exceleration, but I never had the "Check Engine" light come on.

I started my truck up again and it almost stalled when I started it up. But I checked the tranny fluid and that is pink, so that's good. But I did notice that there was a squeaking sound coming from the drivers side on the bottom...could this be a belt or a loose plug? I'm still taking it to the dealer tomorrow,I know belts aren't covered under my warranty but whatever it is, I hope it's covered.

What's sad, is that the model T got 25 MPG. A hundred years later and our gas mileage is worse!.

Here's the latest and greatest on my engine. I decided not to start a seperate thread so here is my story:
Well I took my truck into the dealer this morning, about 2 1/2 hrs later the service advisor informs me that they will have to take apart the whole top portion of the engine. According to the codes, I had lots of misfires causing some type of damage to a cylinder(maybe two, can't remember) and need spark plugs and other stuff. He asked me if I had ever changed the plugs since i got my truck and I told him no because I bought it after it passed 30K mark and figured that would have been part of the 112 pt inspection in order for it to be a certified pre-owned vehicle (I'm guessing on this one)? So my truck will be in there for at least this week and probably next week too. \clipart{angry} Replacing the plugs will cost $267 plus my oil changed that is needed too and the $100 deductible. I asked the advisor if once everything else is done if I can get the plugs replaced somewhere else for a fraction of the cost. He said he'll ask to see what kind of deal they can give me. I'd rather have another place do the plugs for way less than that since they are aftermarket parts. Is this a lemon issue that I have now on a pre-owned certified truck?

I am going through the very same thing with my 99

what did you finally do to correct the problem? we are almost 400 bucks into repairs that have done othing but line the pockets of the service advisor and the wrench that did the work...work my foot all he was doing is exchanging parts hopeing to stumble on the problem...he didn't and still hit us with a giant bill. so what happened with yours?

Did this fall under your warranty?
