heater problems

Hey Guys.I recently bought a 96 f150.After looking under the hood i noticed the heater has been by-passed.I'm guessing this was done because the heater is not working.I would be grateful to hear from anyone who knows where i might be able to find a new or used heater and how much of a job it is to replace it.I thank you in advance.

When you say bypassed: do you mean the hoses running to the heater core, in the fire wall, don't go there anymore? People will do this if the heater core is leaking and they don't have the money to have it fixed.

One of the hoses has been cut, another is hanging down.I guess the heater core is,indeed, not working. Is it difficult to replace this and what should i expect to pay for the core?

A replacement heater core will run you up to about $50 or so, if you do it yourself. They are generally accessible after removing the glovebox housing, or under the RH dash; some are accessible from underhood. They are not terribly diffucult to remove/replace, just make sure to cover the interior carpet with plastic to prevent coolant from leaking on the carpet.

Fill in your truck info and look under chassis electrical and then heater. it gives instructions on heater core R & R.

This is a common problem on the F150. I also need a heater core replacement in my 98.

I believe the 96 model is fairly easy compared to the later ones.

In any case, the 98 requires full dash removal, full duct removal and days worth of work.
