4.9L engine won't start
4.9L engine won't start
hey guys I've posted on here before and everyone has been very helpful. Unfortunately I'm posting again due to a problem I had with my truck today. I have a 92 F150 with the 4.9L Inline 6 engine, everything was running fine up till today but when I went to head home from school today it wouldnt start. i eventually got it started by jumping over the solenoid on the fender with a screwdriver. This made me assume that it was just a solenoid gone bad, a pretty easy fix, but i got home and replaced it and still the same i can get it started by jumping across the solenoid but when you try by turning the key nothing happens doesnt turn over at all. i assume there is some problem with the power getting from the ignition to the solenoid, but im not exactly sure how to test this or if there are any other parts in that line that could go bad and cause this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like it may be the key switch. You obviously have power going through the "run" side of the switch as you can jump it across the solenoid terminals. Pull the "start" wire off of the solenoid and have a friend turn the switch to the "crank" position. If you do not have power there, it may be switch.
Also may be the clutch or neutral saftey switch. You didn't state whether you have an auto or manual.
Hope this helps,

Yea it looks like it is one of those sensors you mentioned. I am able to start the engine normally when it is in neutral but not in park. I guess the sensor for park has gone bad. I'll have to look into that a bit as i have no idea where they are located or how much they will cost to replace. If anyone has had to replace them on their truck before please shoot me back a message and let me know. thanks
The park/neutral safety switch on your truck is either located at the base of the steering column or on the transmission where the linkage hooks to it. If it will start normally in neutral, but not in park, as you say, that is probably the guilty culprit. Try wiggling the shift lever in the park position as you hold the switch in the "crank" position---the safety switch may just be slightly out of adjustment.
