Question 5.4 Reliability?

I recently purchased a 2002 F150 XLT Supercab 4x4 shortbox with the 5.4 V8 and 4 spd Auto transmission. I read very good reviews about this motor prior to purchase in auto magazines but didn't happen upon this site until after I bought the truck. I am curious to know if there are any issues that others have had so I can watch for them. Thank you very much.

do a search here on the 5.4

the 5.4 is a very solid engine and will hopefully never leave you stranded. the only thing that could leave you stranded would be the blown plug issue that happens on a few of these engines.

oh and welcome! you will love your new truck! (I have the 5.4 and love it)

Yes, it is a good engine. I have a 1999 5.4 with 4X4 and think it is remarkable that it has so much power combined with what I consider very good fuel efficiency. But if you ever hear a strange noise from the engine - don't just wonder about it. Check the torque on the spark plugs immediately and do yourself a big favor. You could have one loosening which with the aluminum head means replacing the head at a not cheap price since Ford doesn't want to recognize this problem. Seems to be some increasing support from Ford with these problems, but I would not count on it. Owner beware.

The 5.4 is an excellent engine, as well as the 4.6. The 5.4 is stronger. I have trucks with both engines. The gas mileage is similar unloaded (which is rare) but, the 5.4 will get better gas mileage loaded, won't down-shift when going up a hill, and will get to speed much quicker than the 4.6.

Use good oil and keep your truck maintained and it will last for many miles.

I have owned the 4.6 and the 5.4, and I love the 5.4. I don't know anyone personally who has a 5.4 who has problems with it.
My 2000 xlt scab 4x4 orp with 5.4 and all the toys is the finest truck I have ever owned.

My 2000 5.4 pinged. Worked on all the usual causes listed on these boards. Nothing fixed it until I made the Ford dealer work on the PCM. They did that one free btw.

Spark plug blow out happens usually due to trash down the plug hole or one that wasn't tight to begin with. They sell a deeper plug socket for these engines. I suggest buying one. Torque wrench well I never use one I just use the Craftsman plug wrench and crank it down till it stops good. Not saying it don't work to meet torque specs but.. That dam socket cost more than most of my wrenches. I didn't buy a torque wrench.
