Underdrive Pulleys Installed ( pictures )

Well, I had a nice long how-to written up with pictures, but got a message that it was too big, and it was all DELETED, so for now here's the pictures. I'll either write another how-to later, or link to the other floating around. I think B-man wrote it...

Most of the tools required. You'll also need a 3/8" ratchet to hold down the belt tensioner, and an 8mm (I think) to remove the fan shroud.

New water pump pulley on the left, OEM on the right.

New crank pulley on the right, OEM on the left.

New Goodyear Gatorback belt. I got mine from Summit $21 plus shipping. The local parts stores wanted $45 plus tax.

Here's the OEM pulleys, and the harmonic balancer puller.

And here it is all said and done. Without the fan. (Dang, I hated putting that big ol' thing back on there...)

Nice.

You could have tried hitting "back" and sometimes the text will still be there. That way you could have copied it to notepad or something.

Tried that, but it was blank when I went back...

Oh, well...

and the pulleys have been on a few days now, but this tank of gas will be null and void when it comes to calculating MPG. None of the mods I've done have been a kick in the pants increase, but intake, exhaust, chip and now pulleys does make it fun to drive, and hard to keep the foot up... plus with the sway bars even the twisties are fun...

Now if I could just afford a FTVB and a set of electric fans, I'd be happy ( for a little while ).

Thumbs up

Looks really, really good. What kind of performance gains have you noticed? I'm interested in doing this at some point, but I'm wondering what of gains I'll see.

Well, I wouldn't say there's any down low increase, but I can definately feel a difference when the RPM's are up. When it kicks down while passing I can definately tell a difference. I would really like to drive a stock truck with the same drivetrain as mine, just to see what difference all the mods together add.

The only downside is when your idling in gear with the lights, radio, A/C and wipers you can tell a little dim in the lights, but honestly it's hardly noticeable...

I'm still waiting for Dad to get his Dyno setup. I had hoped to check my truck with different combos of mods, but the longer the Dyno takes the more stuff I get, and the less likely I'll be to pull it all off... Still I should be able to get a Dyno reading on what's done before too much longer... I hope...

King James - I rented a "Ford Fan Tool" from AutoZone (far left in the top picture). It's actually two wrenches, but they gave me the one for the Ford 4.9L, and the smaller fan wrench was too small, so I had to use the adjustable in the picture.

country2 - I got mine from the f150online.com classifieds. Hell of a deal on new in the box pulleys. $100 shipped. But you can get them for $189 + shipping from mike at www.troyerperformance.com Great guy, and great site. I got my chip from him, and would've got the the pulleys and belt from him if I hadn't found such a great deal. I'm sure there are other place you can get them, and if you get the 2 pulley set with the correct number of ribs you can use Mustang GT pulleys. In fact, the instructions that were with my pulleys were for a Mustang GT.

Well, "do things when you get the money" is how most of us work around here. You just need to prioritize. If you're looking for fuel economy, the pulleys are probably your best bet of the three you listed. If you're looking for performance, probably the programmer or a chip. But if you just want it to sound really good, plus maybe improve performance a bit get the exhuast. Either way you can't go wrong. These trucks are great no matter what you do to them...
