Question Changing Fuel Filter?

I HAVE A '99 V8 5.4 F150. IT STARTS UP FINE BUT WON'T STAY RUNNING UNLESS I REIVE THE ENGINE. IT WANTS TO DIE WHENEVER I COME TO A STOP. I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE THE FUEL FILTER BECAUSE IT HASNT BEEN CHANGED IN A WHILE. DOES ANYONE HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT IT MIGHT BE. ALSO HOW CAN I FIND THE FUEL SUPPLY MANIFOLD SO THAT I CAN RELIVE THE FUEL PRESSURE.

There is a fuel cutoff switch behind the floor panel on the passenger side of the vehicle. You pull the wiring harness off and start the engine until it quits running. This will releive the fuel pressure. Be sure to reconnect the wiring harness when you are done. Depress the button on the switch when you hook it back up just incase it might have tripped when you re-connect the wiring harness.

check your idle air control valve
power 10-12volts with key on
valve ohm resistace 6-13
remove valve check for carbon deposits

I found it was easier to pull the fuse for the fuel pump. Also, do a search and you'll find some great instructions for changing the fuel filter, including highly accurate predictions of when and how much gas will spill on you

all i ever did was let the truck sit for a couple of min. it only maintains pressure if the key's on. make sure you got the proper (ford fuel filter) tools. start with the from tank supply line. remove spring saftey clip. work the hose back and forth on the fuel filter tubeing to ensure it's free. push it as close as you can to the filter. insert the special release tool over the tubeing, push it as far into the coupling as you can. than holding the tool and coupling slide them away from the filter. when the special tool contacts the retaining flange on the filter tubeing, let the tool slide through your fingers, then the coupling will slide off the tubeing. quickly tuck the hose behind the other fuel lines and cover the end of the tubeing. if you have a small jar you can the drain the residual fuel. repeat the process for the engine supply line (next smaller tool) at the most you might lose a little more fuel than the filter holds.

the most important thing is to ensure you free up the couplings on the tubeing. i've changed out filters on F-150's, Explorers, Expeditions and Aerostars and it was always the smallest tool in the set for the engine side and the next one up for the tank side.
