I have a 4.6L...

My mod list includes Electric Fans, K&N FIPK, Underdrive Pulleys, Superchip, Magnaflow Cat-back, NX kit, 3.73 Gears and Superchip. I can get 16.5 MPG city driving and around 20mpg Highway driving and run 14.5s at the drag strip in an extended cab truck... I would say wait until you can afford the 4.6l engine... It's got good gas mileage, not too many problems, and it's got more power than the 6cyl.

So If the v6 only gets 16ish mpg, Id wait for the 4.6 just for the added power if I wre you.

Good luck!
I would agree the V6 auto may feel “gutless” but a 4.6 auto compared to a 4.2 manual, the 4.6 will be a bit more “gutless” then the 4.2 V6 manual since it will have less horsepower to the real wheels…

The 4.6L is bulletproof. It does not consume more gas than the six-banger, and it (4.6L) is able to take the weight of a 5,000 lbs. plus truck with stride. A few mods. even with the auto tranny, would liven up the acceleration.

I would go with the V8 as you be glad you have the extra power some day plus I've heard the V6's have had head gasket problems in the past.

the 4.6s and 5.4 also had HG leaks. That is why I have a GT now.
