Tips for finding source of vibration???

I've got a vibration in my truck that I only experience when it is in gear, with my foot on the brake. If I increase the RPMs slightly the vibration ceases. The dealership says this is normal for a 5.4 L engine with approx 52K miles. Its a 2000 F150 extended cab.

Any suggestions on where to turn to isolate this vibration or what to do about it? It's just bad enough to be very noticeable whenever I'm at a stop, and I'm also concerned that whatever is loose and causing the vibration may lead to something worse down the road, more than likely after my warranty runs out.

FYI, I've just recently flushed the transmission fluid, and added Lubeguard in case it was a transmission issue, but the problem still exists.

Also, they have applied the new motor mounts as indicated in a Ford TSB. To be honest, I think the vibration feels stronger since they did.

HELP!!!

Hey tesexton

When they did the tsb, did they do it all or just the engine mounts. The only tsb I can find is for the 2001 model year, but I have seen it done to earlier years. The tsb procedure is to replace the engine mounts, neutralize the powertrain(exhaust, trans mounts and engine mounts) and reprogram the pcm.

In my truck(2001 5.4) the mounts and neutralizing the powertrain did nothing, but re programming the pcm fixed about 90% of the vibration. The newer calibration ups the base idle slightly and that seems to make all the difference in the world.

You should check to see if they reprogrammed your pcm, if not I would try that first( it is part of the tsb)

Xplorer,

They only mentioned installing the motor mounts. I'll have to check back with them on the rest. Any idea where I can get a copy of the TSB?

Just to throw something out there: My local transmission guy in TN said that the Ford trucks experience a lot of driveline vibration due to the torque convertor. Since they're set to shift so slow, the overlap burns up the convertor over time. Possibly talk to a local reputable independant shop and see if they say the same thing.

Flea,

Thanks for the tip. I recently had the torque converter replaced due to a 3rd gear failure.

Have to give kudos to Ford's extended warranty program. This happened while I was on vacation ~500 miles from home. They covered the rental car for me to drive home, and return 4 days later to pick up the truck.
