4.2 reliable?
A search will show you the problems in 97 with the antifreeze leaking into the oil.
One of the posts here said that since that problem was fixed in 98, the v-6 has been the most reliable of the three motors. I don't have any facts to back that up. I remember that the guy who posted was quoting his wife who worked at Ford in the area that handles the reporting of engine problems.
Mine has been very liable thus far. 63K now.
I do believe that synthetic oil helps increase life but that's a whole topic that has been beat until it's dead here on the forums.

I only know one person with the 4.2. Had it in a 97 and spun a main bearing at about 70,000 mi. I believe Ford helped him out on the fix but not sure how much. It neede a whole new engine.
