Wicked Starting Problem
NEW FORD OWNER ASKING FOR YOUR HELP. 1995 F150 W/302 STARTS FINE IN THE MORNING, STARTS FINE IF IMMEDIATLY STARTED AFTER SHUTDOWN, BUT IF STARTED AFTER ONE TO FIVE HOURS OF SHUTDOWN, ENGINE SPINS OVER FOR APPROX. FIVE SECONDS, THEN STARTS AS IF THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS BLED DOWN. NOW KEEP IN MIND IT DOES FINE IN THE MORNING AFTER EIGHT TO TEN HOURS OF DOWN TIME. CLEANED IDLE CONTROL VALVE AND CHECKED RESISTANCE OF SOLENOID. COIL CHECKS OK ON PRIMARY AND SECONDARY RESISTANCE. FUEL PUMP ALWAYS SOUNDS THE SAME WITH A ONE TO TWO SECOND BUZZ AND A CLICK CLICK. I'M A DIESEL AND HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC AND AM LOST UNDER THE HOOD OF ANYTHING WITH GAS AND AN EEC.
Could be a faulty fuel pump relay, the relays are under hood, and it could be getting warm and cutting out when it's warm, but running ok when it's cold. Worth a shot. Any more ideas, y'all?
How about a problem with mixture. I recall something about residual fuel pressure bleeding off through leaky injectors at a very slow rate. It would after a while flood the engine and would take a while longer sitting to clear. Try putting the pedal all of the way down ( clear flood mode for injected gas engines, it shuts off injector pulse) and see if it starts up quicker
