Not sure about the 03's. But my 99 has been virtually trouble free.
Have 114k on the clock one tune up so far with lots of oil changes in between.
If I was in the market for another F150 with a 4.6. I don't think I would hesitate in buying another one. ;-)

2000 Regular Cab, with 83K miles, with the 4.6, no engine problems using RXP once per month and EssentiaLube, 2 oz. per gallon on a full tank. Used Motorcraft Oil, 5W-30, changed every 3k miles until started with the Amsoil 0W-30. Now change oil every 35K, and filter every 12.5 k miles. Getting 17 mpg on the road at 70 MPH. Only trouble so far is oil sending unit replaced, and replaced rear brake sensor so the anti-lock brakes would function.

I have a 98 with 80K miles and my 4.6 is ten times better than my nissan maxima's engine. Initially, I was disapointment with power and performance, but with a few mods, I don't remember the power lag and it runs stronger and quicker than most 5.4s.

I've only got 45K miles but it's been a great runner so far. Only other issue has been squeaky fan belt. Have to replace about every 20k miles. Keep in mind this engine has logged a lot of Crown Vic taxi miles.

I have a 98 and had to have the heads milled at 66k due to bad head gaskets and warped heads. Ford fixed it. Now have 118k and am leaking oil on the right head. Decided to swap the motor and put in a crate 5.4. I got the motor this week, and will start the swap this weekend.

If I had to do it all over again, I most certainly would!!! I love my truck and the 4.6 is still a great motor. I have a 98 Mustang GT with the 4.6 and it runs great.

Cool

'97 4.6L

94K on it and no problems...yet! Just rotten gas milage (par for a 4x4 though)

I'm not supersticious, but the dang engine will probably fall apart tomorrow...

85,000 hard miles and have not had a motor problem the 4.6 is great maybe a little underpowered (i have 308 gears arg!!). I drive 55 miles each way each day and am very confident when i get behind the wheel. (and sometimes i just grin )
