Replaced coils, wires, and plugs
Replaced coils, wires, and plugs
Guys,
In regards to everything that has ever been posted on this subject, I feel for anyone who tackles this job on their own. This has been the most difficult job ever and in my opinion should be reserved for the dealer. Ford has made the engine bay so tight that you just about need to drop to engine to get to the plugs. Never mind my frustration...installed the Troyer ignition upgrade which includes ACCEL wires, coils, and denso iridium spark plugs. With the e'fans and pulleys, my 4.6 constantly get between 18-19 MPH in the city. Hopefully, the ignition upgrade will keep it above 20 MPH.
4.10s are next, so I will have to save some $$ for that job.

i am changing my plugs and wires in 2 weeks and was wondering do they recommend a coil replacement when you change out the plugs and wires? probably something i need to know before i tackle this job hey....and crain you are really making me have serious doubts about doing it myself....
Mahoney22e,
My mechanical skills are below average at best, but I can follow directions and do just about anything to my truck. I think I have read only one post on the board where someone claimed to have changed the plugs in less than an hour...I don't see how, but that's what they claimed. I called the Ford Dealer and they require over 2 1/2 hours to change the plugs alone, not counting wires and coils. My truck is a 98 with over 80K miles, so I thought it wise to change everything. Coils by themselves will probably run between $30-$40 each. The coils are the easiest part you will change...will need a 7mm socket. Wires and plugs will cause you to say a bad word or too.
Do a search and you will find some good instructions on the board to change out plugs and wires.
Good luck brother.

There are a few threads about it on this board, search for "spark plugs" or something like that and some should turn up.
I looked this weekend on my '97, took out one of the coils, and didnt bother doing anymore. That was just the front passenger side coil, the ones farther back would be a major PITA (for me anyway) to remove.
I would suggest getting out a 7mm ratchet, and see how you do on the easiest coil to get to, and then decide if that was hard, if you think you can do the rest.

has a video, but it makes it seem VERY easy in comparison to what it was like for me to get mine out. I couldnt even get the plug out it was in so tight (they are either the stock plugs, or were replaced at some point and no anti-sieze was used).
Good luck anyway, I wish I had the time/patience/skill to do it myself.
