1994 - F150 Engine Light

Well this is my first post.

Love my truck, 95,000 miles and going strong.

Must confess I only do standard maintenance, ever since carburators went away.... engines seemed to be sealed up.....I

anyway my engine light has been coming on periodically. I took it to the dealership and the mechanic told me it is a generic code. ( I did not get the number...sorry) He went on to say that the 1994 has one of the earliest computers and this is a default code.... and frequently means nothing.

I am still worried - I want to drive this baby for many more years.

The light comes on when you get up to speed - 50-65mph - and/or when going into overdrive (5th gear). No other indecators on the dash - temp is fine, oil pressure etc...

Any ideas? I know this is not much to go on - but any ideas or experieince with this problem would be a great help.

Thanks in advance,

Pat

Computers have been in vehicles since the late 70's. The computer in you r truck is very capable of giving you some indication of what might be wrong. Frequently codes set while at crusing speed are related to EGR valves or O2 sensor problems. You should really get the code and find out what it is telling you. Let us know what code you get and we will be happy to help.

Thanks....I'll try to get the code.

Are there any connector cables/software that you can plug into a palm? Or a laptop to get the code?

You have an OBD I type code plug. You will need to get a reader and pull the code (search on OBD and you will get a multitude of sites). Once you have a code you can check the code against
http://www.fordf150.net/howto/eecivcodes.php
and perform the corrective action.

Thanks so much for being so helpful to a newbie - so many forums have this newbies stink attitude. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise!!!

A mechanic friend said he will get the code for me early next week.

What is the general opinion on the forum? Would and OBD I machine be worth buying? I have not found a OBD I/II machine? Do they make one that can connect and read both?? That seems to make more sense in the long term.

Thanks again,
pat

Welcome to the board Pat. Go to : http://www.troublecodes.net/Ford/

It will give you detailed instructions along with images on pulling the code. It also has a list of codes at the bottom for your OBD system.

Or, at very least, you can cross refernce the code when your friend pulls it.

Good luck
