Hello guys, first time poster here. I need a little help please Sirs.

I have a 1998 F150 with a 4.2L engine. My check engine light has come on and had the codes pulled at Autozone. P0401 came up and was suggested that I clean out my EGR valve.

I did exactly as I was told and this did help out for about 3 days and the light came back on again. (Same code). All plugs, wires and fuel filter have been changed out. The truck runs fine except when stopped at a red light after about 1 min. the truck will hesitate and begin to run a little rough and act as if was going to stall.

Any idea what I am missing and what direction I need to look at next. Ford wants to charge me $100.00 dollars just to run a test to see why my check engine light is on. If I can fix the problem myself I rather do it that way.

Did you check for any more codes???

 

that was the only code that was coming up.

 

The EGR valve is either bad and/ or your EGR ports in the intake are plugged.
