Help - 5.4L Cranking problem

I have a '99 F150 with the 5.4L. On occasion, when I start the engine (cold), the motor will immediately die. In order to get it to run, I have to hold the gas pedal down. After driving it for a few minutes, everything is fine. This has happened 3 times over the last 6,000 miles. The truck has 56,000 miles on it. After the second time, I replace the fuel filter and the problem went away, until today. Anyone have any experience with this issue?

Finatic321,

Your truck does start if you hold the gas pedal down, therefore, I do not think you have a fuel delivery issue. However, by pushing the pedal down, you are opening up the throttle body to provide air and then it starts. My best guess, based on the information you provided, would be a malfunctioning IAC (Intake Air Control) valve located behind the throttle body. It sounds like the IAC is stuck closed...no "air for idling". You can try cleaning with a mild cleaner and reinstall. If that doesn't work then I would consider purchasing a replacement.

Thanks for the info...makes sense after you explain it. What does the IAC look like and is there anything particularly tricky about changing one?
