Angry Power Steering Noise

Hello- I am a new owner of an F-150 Supercrew with the 5.4 L engine. I have 2,000 miles on my truck and have had the power steering pump replaced because of excess noise. The dealer said there was a technical bulletin from Ford on the pump. After they replaced the pump, the noise came back. Now the dealer says they cannot hear it. It is driving me nuts!!! It sounds like the pump is going out. I also need the driveshaft replaced (another bulletin). I am beginning to think this truck is a lemon!!! Is anyone else having these kinds of problems with their truck.
Thanks

Consult your Lemon Laws for you state. Carry it to a differant dealership. If they "repair" the power steering problem it may be a problem with the first dealer.

Good luck.

Take it to another dealer. Tell them the PS is making too much noise. let them figure it out. The other dealer may or may not have replaced the pump or replaced it with another bad pump ETC. If there is a bulletin about the pump and the driveshaft and you have only 2000 MI then let them fix it. Lemon laws only protect you for loss of the vehicle over an extended period or a repested attempt to fix the same problem with no results. Check out the Bureau of automotive repairs website ( state of California, department of consumer affairs). It will have all of the information you need.

Ford is known for "loud" powersteering unit noise upon turning the wheel. I have a 92 t-bird, 96 explorer and 97 f-150 and all have "loud" units. :

I had the power steering noise on my '03. The dealer fixed it earlier this year instead of replacing the whole unit. Mine has been "whine free" ever since.

If your truck was built before Oct. 7 2002, here is the fix:

first off your truck is no where near a lemmon! ALL Manufactures have little problems like you are having.

Ford does not make the PS pump or even the drive shaft they are sourced just like the rest of the parts. Fords have always been famous for loud PS there is nothing wrong with it and they will usually quiet down with age. Your tire pressure could be too low as well and you are putting a strain on the unit. it might have too little/too much fluid in it from the factory.

take it to another dealer and see what they say.

good luck-

My 99 Expy has always had an 'audible' power steering pump. Its most noticable in the passenger seat, not so much from the drivers side. After five years its no noisier, no quieter, and still works fine. I think a certain amount of noise is just inherent.

It's normal, I have had two F-150s and my dad has had two, they all make the noise... Between the 4, we have clocked over 200,000 miles with no steering problems, now my old Chevy never made a sound but bled power steering fluid the whole time I had it. Go figure.

I have had a 90 Escort GT, an 89 Mustang GT, a 95 F150, a 95 Ranger and I now have an 01 F-150 supercab 4x4 and every one has had noticable power steering noise. Some were louder than others but I never had a single problem with the power steering. Hopefully yours is nothing to worry about. It really seem normal for Fords.
