runs like crap
HI im new to these forums but i need some help im completly stumped about 2 days ago my AIR pump went out on my 1986 F150 4X4 it has a 302 with about 30,000 miles on it all the other components are from the orginal engine. anyway i was on my way home from work and i heard the pump start to make this awful clikcing noise so i pulled over and took of the belt about 10 minutes later i heard a poping noise and it sounding like i had a massive exaust leak the engine stumbled really bad wouldent idle for **** but if i romped on it all the power was still there. i got home and upon further investigation i found that the valve on the AIR tubes had overheated and blown i went out and bought a new pump and valve after much curseing and mashing my knuckles i got both replaced. i dissconnected the battery for about 3 hrs to reset the computer i went to start the truck and it barely fired it was idleing around 500 rpm and barely holding on i put it in gear and the rpms go to about 700 and it still runs ruff i took it for a test drive around town and under light pedal the whole truck vibrates if i mash it down the truck takes off like a bat out of hell but a lovely could of grey/black smoke is left behind me.
some extra details: i have regulary done tune ups and oil changes on it i replaced the knock sensor a while back as far as i know all the other sensors are orginal or replaced before i bought it. before the AIR pump and valve went it ran great with a slight ruff idle due to the old injectors that i need to replace but are about $70 each and i need 8 so thats gunna wait. i use this truck to drive to and from work its my only transportation i need to fix this any ideas?????

kind of funny, I just bought exact same truck except its a manual trannie, anyway I would check for any codes, also how do you know your injectors arent working properly? I would check spark, and fuel pressure... Also if you have time, I would pull the intake manifold, pull the fuel rail, and take a look @ the injectors, rig up a switch, and take a look @ the spray patterns. but thats what I would do... also look @ the plugs, keep us posted.
For your injectors if you think there bad, go here http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/Injector_SetsFORD.asp you have the 19lb/hr injectors, you can order a set of 8 for a pretty good price, or here http://store.summitracing.com/partde...MS%2DM9593C302 either way you go they should both work gr8... good luck and let us know how it goes... I wouldn't pay for injectors from the dealer... way to expensive
fixed!
a tad late i guess, the injectors were full of carbon from the AIR system going out it filled the intake manifold with carbon as well. the shop had to pull the intake off and clean it out. then cleaned the injectors on a bench cleaner and informed me my injectors are about 100,000 miles over due for replacement anway. cant afford it ill check out those links above and see. the US NAVY dosent pay me enough to matain a family and 2 cars.
thanks for the info on the injectors!!!

that set from summit seems like my best bet, my question now is how can i tell what kind of injectors i have (19 lbs 22lbs ect) and if it will fit my wireing harness without takeing the air plunum off and the fuel rail. and yeah the recruiting comercials fail to mention that as an E-4 paygrade you only make about $14,000 a year in take home pay free medical for myself and i have to co pay for my family.. go figure and the navy woders why they loose half thier personall after thier first enlistment i have 3 months to go and im getting out
Ah...yes, the "you dont ask, we dont tell" policy. This seems to be exclusive to all American vehicle manufacturers' products....how sad. Moreover, the imports are capitalizing on it, they know how service sucks once you drop your hard earned cash on a new American vehicle. They warrant theirs to 100k. Sad...sad...sad...sad.
Unfortunately thats the only way to get to the injectors is through the upper intake manifold, all u have to do is take the throttle body off leave coolant lines connected, now would also be a good time to take off the egr valve and spend a night cleaning it and the intake manifold, the port on mine was completely blocked... the upper intake manifold has 6 bolts and its off, the one in the middle under the passenger side can be tricky but just take your time and do it right, also make sure u have no oil on the back of your engine like a puddle if you do you might as well as take the lower intake off too and replace the gaskets...but u have to take distributor and stuff off to do the lower.... anyway after u have the upper off theres 4 bolts holding the rail onto the lower intake manifold, the injectors you have are bosch style connectors, 19/lb an hour are stock for your truck if it hasnt been modified... I bought the ones @ summit and they worked gr8... also u may want to check to see if you have any codes... if you need to know how ask... Also dont worry if you break the injector connector clips when taking em off I think I broke all of mine... Good luck and let us know how it goes
heh, guess beter late then never. i replaced the injectors with the set from summit they were made for a mustang and i think the truck uses a slightly diffrent intake as the injector tips were a little wider then the ones installed allready little sandpaper fixed that issue. it ran really bad for about 5 minutes then it just purred. took off at an intersection on the test drive and it shredded rubber through 1st gear and chirped going into 2nd. i installed a tranny cooler and a makeshift temp guage in preperation of my getting out of the NAVY and planning on towing my 68 mustang home. truck did very well i was able to matain 60 mph @10 mpg sadly halfway through New Mexico my wifes car a 95 touras front right wheel bearing went out. the old bearing was seized in the knuckle and it was a sunday so nothing was open. her car had all of our valuables and hard to replace items i had to sell the mustang and forcibly drag her broken car onto the trailer. we made it to CA safe and sound after that, i then drove up to WA to pick up my other car at my parents its a small hatchback so i used a tow dolly instead of a full trailer. while at my parents my dad noticed my exaust pipe looked funny and it turned out it was rusted to hell quick trip down to the parts store and i had a new highflow cat and flow master muffler busted out the welder and i was in business. while at my dads who has a garage with every tool known to man i decided to retire the old bench seat i went down to the junkyard and found a perfet set of full power seats out of a mid 90's thunderbird i made some brackets and ran a few wires and now im rideing comfortable. after 4500 miles and 3000 of those miles towing my truck is running strong and loud.
