Due For a Tune-Up

Hey Guys

My 97' 4.6L F150 4X4 extended cab is due for a good tune-up. Any suggestions on what to look for, or what I should get checked, replaced, or changed? What do garages usually do to tune up your vehicle? She has 160,000 kms on her. Any suggestions, or what's involved in a tune-up??

Thanks

BJ,

If you live anywhere near Kingston, On, I have a private mechanic who does quality work, and charges very little compared to the dealerships.

I cringe at the thought of having to get any big job done at the dealer that isnt under warrenty.

Beejay,

A tune up for your truck consists of changing the Plugs, Wires, and the upstream O2 sensors.

If never done before, you should also consider changing the Front and Rear Diff oil, T-Case oil and lube linkage if MSOTF, Tranny flush, possible Coolant flush as it should be done every 2 years, Fuel Filter, grease door hinges, hood and tailgate too.

Regards

I just changed the wires and plugs on my 97 F150, 4.6 with 177k on it. Although it ran well, before, it does run better after the change. Nothing else was changed since I have no codes and the rule of thumb I've used on both my trucks is if it ain't broke don't fix it. The plugs and wires are certainly a bear to change on those engines though even for an experienced mechanic!
I was at the Ford dealership the other day and talked with the service manager (who by the way is an old friend of mine and the reason I bought my 97 there back in 96) and he said that they see a lot of the 4.6 engines going for 250k and up with just the routine maintenance. This is a good engine.........

Thanks guys, some really useful info here that I'll be using. I've already changed the drive belt, plugs, wires, & transfer case oil.
