Po455 & Po302

Hi all,

Lotsa great info on this board.

I posted earlier under the "Broken Injector Connector". I have since taken the truck to an AutoZone to get the code pulled. It pulled 4 codes (2 of the same codes 2 times)

The codes were PO455 "Large Emissions Air Leak" and PO302 "Cylinder 2 Misfire".

I think that the PO302 code is pretty self explainitory due to the fact that I just changed the plugs and wires. I fugure that it must be a bad plug, bad wire, or bad coil. The only question that I have with regards to this code (it is a dumb one) is which cyl is #2?

The PO455 code stumps me a bit. I have read that it could be the gas cap. The o-ring on it looks good. What else could throw this code?

The truck is a 97 F-150 with a 4.6L. Mileage is 150000. Check engine light had been on before the plug/wire change that I just did.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

P0455 is a gross leak in the evap system. Your fuel system will pressurize and test for pressure loss. Either you have a large hole in the evap system, or you left the gas cap loose. Probably the latter of the two. Since the cap looks good, take a damp rag and clean the caps rubber seal and where it seats on the filler hole, clear the code and see if it comes back.

On the P0302: Standing in front of the truck looking at the engine, #2 is the second cylinder on the left counting front to back. Since you replaced the wires and plug, the misfire may be the injector or corrosion on the coil post. Clean the coil post with fine grit sandpaper. Check the harness on the injector and tap the injector with the back of a screwdriver. Clear the code and see if it comes back. If so, grab a manual and test it electrically.

To clear all the history codes, simply disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes.

Yo Throttle!

Thanks for the much needed info!

Here is an update...

I pulled the plug on cyl no. 2 it looked fine. No oil or "wet" look to it. I checked the plug wire and did not see any tears/cracks, etc.
I disconnected the battery as you suggested to reset the computer and reconnected 1/2 hour later. I let the truck idle for 10 mins. and was about to take it for a drive. I decided that since it was dark I would turn off the engine compartment light and look for any arcing. Sure enough there were several places that were throwing little blue sparks. I seperated the cyl. 2 wire from the rest and noticed that you could see tiny blue sparks moving to my fingers from the wire. I was not grounded or I prolly would have gotten a little jolt! I think that there inlies my problem. A bad wire. I purchased them at Car Quest. I am going to try to get them to give me a new no. 2 wire.

Any suggestions on another brand of wires? I would like something that will last for 75K-100K miles.

Thanks again!

I've got a brand new set of Motorcraft wires I'll sell you. Pretty much the same as the original wires. Email me and we can discuss price and shipping if you are interested.

Use Motorcraft wires, or Napa's premium wire set. Any other will be a waste of time.
