5.4L coil pack

Forgive me if this has been answered a million times. I did a search and couldn't find specifically what I wanted. What I need to know is how difficult it is to replace a coil pack on a '97 5.4L. I twice paid over $300(including the coil) to have one installed at the local Ford dealership. I now have another one bad and want to do it myself. I can get one for about $50 at AutoZone, but I wonder about the quality. Would I be better served to get one at the dealership? Thanks in advance.

I have installed 3 of the coils from Autozone and or Advanced Auto.

The Sorensen coils I have installed on my 5.4 work just as well as the high dollar MotorCraft ones did or do.

I am not hardcore keep it motorcraft for the reason if motorcraft was indeed the best it would probably have a service life of over 20,000 miles which seems to be about the mileage on a coil before one sees some failure.

IMHO

Thanks Tom! How tough are they to install?

On the 5.4 replacing the COP coil assembly is a matter of unplugging the wire and removing the 7mm bolt that secures the coil to the air plenum.

The only one I view as difficult to remove is number 7 due to it's location and the fuel rail's location. a 1/4 inc swivel will be needed in addition to the 7mm socket to remove this one easily.
