Fuel Mileage Question

What kind of fuel mileage are you guys getting with your F150's? I just bought a 2003 F150 XLT 4X4. So far I have put about 310km (193miles) and my fule tank is reading just above 1/4 of a tank of fuel left. Does this sound normal to you? My truck has the 4.6L, 3.31 Gears and 235/70R16 tires.

My '03 Lariat FX4 gets 13-15.5 in mixed city/highway, and nearly 17 if I stay on the freeway (and at a reasonable speed....)

Is that for the 4.6 or the 5.4?

Sorry, that's the 5.4. Most of the time, all I am hauling is me - From jobsite to jobsite and back to the office. On weekends I might load it up with yard debris or take out the travel trailer. Damn trailer knocks the mileage down to 11-12 range.

your mileage numbers will increase as the engine breaks in. what you are experiencing is normal.

Thank you everyone for all your help.

I really love my new truck. I was really torn between getting the ford and the chev. I think that I am glad that I went with the ford.

You really also need to do the math, rather than just noting you're slightly above a 1/4 tank! That last 1/4 tank in some vehicles is quite large, or quite small. So, you really need to track the milage and how much it takes to fill 'er back up. Then work the mpg or km/L.

I know with my former F150's, it seemed to me they weren't broke in for fuel economy until at least 10,000km. My current Dakota with 4.7L V8 (Comparable engine), but likely with less weight, is getting what I consider to be poor performance on the highway, with no more than 22 MPG noted so far. The city milage is decent around 17-18mpg (these are all Cdn MPG by the way). I've got about 14,000km on it so far. But, I'm gonne be making the switch to Mobil 1 right away. And I know with previous vehicles I've had, it seemed to help a little in the MPG department. Even 1 MPG improvement would be good. That's an extra 40-50kms a tank!

my new '03 lariat fx4 5.4

my first two tanks I got 16 and 15 MPG respectively. No hauling, AC running! Seems to be normal. I'd like to see 18 to 20, but I certainly did not buy it for economy purposes

I just did a calculation for my mileage. I am getting 15mpg. That is all city driving. That is also Canadian mpg. So I guess I am doing pretty good.

I have a 2003 Supercab 4x4, 4.6L and am getting 15 MPG with mixed highway/city driving. Typically get 17 MPG highway. This is driving very easy on the gas. I have a lot of hills to contend with, on flat land I think it would do better.

p.s. I got 13 MPG on my first tank. It does get a little better, not much.

The rental that I'm driving is a 2003 SuperCrew 4X4, 5.4L and 3.55 gears. It has been getting 17.5 mpg consistantly driving with the cruise and AC at 75 mph. I didn't think that was too bad.

my truck gets absolutely the most terrible mileage... i filled up last week with $30 worth of gas and $7 worth of fuel system treatment and it lasted 230 miles until my fuel light came on
230 miles divided by 25 gallons = 9.2 mpg... that SUCKS...

When the fuel light comes on, don't you still have a couple of gallons left in the tank ??? Did you take that into account?
