Dyno'd Intake?

Hey, sorry if this has been covered... I searched, but didn't see anything...

I was just curious if anyone has done an actual dyno on a N/A V8 with and without a CAI? I'm wanting to do this, and I've seen numerous posts reguarding butt dyno results, computer simulated results, etc, but I'm curious what difference one actually makes on a chassis dyno.

I'm also considering the $50 intakes on ebay. a filter is roughly $40-50. I just can't see that a piece of tubing, a bracket and some hose clamps are worth $200...

Any ideas or complaints about bringing this old subject up again, even though I'm not a newbie, and should know better, are welcome...

Just bored, need something to talk about till the rain stops or the GF comes over...

From what I've noticed over the last several months of reading and posting over here at F150online.com is that hardly anybody has actually taken there truck and dyno'ed it....myself included

Coming from the mustang forums being a previous owner of a Heavily modded 2000 Mustang GT and 2001 Cobra where everybody dyno'ed their cars it was kinda shocking to say the least. But understandable at the same time as probably less than 2% of the guys over here (excluding you Lighting guys) will actually be running there truck down the 1/8 or 1/4 mile dragstip.

But I'm like you and would love to see what some of these mods actually do for our trucks.....if these trucks respond to mods like the 2V 4.6 GT engine then most people would be shocked to have only gained very little to none from stock. As the 2V 4.6 for Mustangs were about maxed from the factory only seeing a handful actually make 250 RWHP with ALL the bolt ons it was very discouraging.

I tried a similar post about Superchips a few months back and nobody could actually prove to me via a dyno sheet where their truck actaully gained anything.......I can tell you that my 2000 GT mustang didn't gain squat! I dyno'ed it and was very displeased with the results.....I still can't believe that Superchips can actually advertise 20+ HP when all I saw was about 10 and I know 5 of that was from the underdrive pullies and probably the other 5 from CIA!

Sorry for the long rant guys!

Hmmm... well, thanks for the response. I may go ahead and get the cheap intake from ebay, and just see what it does. Dad will be getting a chassis dyno here in the next few months, and I had actually planned on checking my truck with and without the chip, and maybe I'll do the same with a cheap intake just to see what it will do. I really wish he'd had the dyno before I got the exhaust though. But since it's the only thing I cannot easily remove I can cheat, and take an average of other completely stock trucks... assuming I can find them...

My truck will likely never see a drag strip, well maybe when it's paid off... I might look into a supercharger then... but until then, just looking for some extra oomph for pulling etc...

I would just offer several observations about dyno tests and mods in general in my view. First I would say that I have a laundery list of mods bolted on my truck, and my truck is definately making more power than stock. How much more??? I have no dynoed answer. As you likely know, the only way dyno results are any good at all is if one does unmodded test and then an immediate modded test. Tests done on different days cannot be compared. I'm sure you know that atmospheric conditions can vary your horsepower results. A small increase in humidity for example can cost ten horsepower in a hurry.

Say for example I buy an AF1 and dyno before and after and find a gain of 10 hp. Then you buy a K&N and dyno before and after and find a gain of 11 hp. Unless we did those tests in the same shop on the same day the results are almost meaningless for comparison purposes.

I have thought about getting a dyno test done, but to what end? I know my truck is faster already. For most of us we just want more power to edge past that Chevy when the moment happens.

To speak to air intakes -- I personally would not be buying the "cheap" one one ebay for $50. I predict you will get what you paid for - the cheap one. Just to relate my personal experience: My first mod was a K&N FIPK for about $200. I bought it because it was in all the adds and it seemed everyone I knew had one (this was also before I knew about F150online.com). I put it on and felt nothing. But honestly what difference will +10 or +12 hp make on a 5000 pound truck? The only correct answer would be to take the truck to the 1/4 mile track and find out exactly what difference the K&N would make - .1 or .2 second in a quarter mile? That is not enough to feel in the seat of my pants.

As I continued to add mods I could tell I was getting faster, but when I went to attach my new $300+ mass air meter, I was sure unhappy this the flimsy plastic K&N design. I spent more $$ on an AF1 with its stainless intake tube. Is it better? I only know this for sure. It holds my expensive mass air meter for better than the K&N ever could.

I read an article about two years ago in one of the truck rags about an intake test. I know that AF1 was not in it. I do not recall reading that all intakes were tested on the same day on the same truck, and even if they were, the horsepower reading would vary throughout the day do to the changing air conditions. I would say that very thorough testing is avoided so as not to P/O any advertisers.

Bottom line for me: I will buy performance parts from someone I trust. Meaning I trust that my supplier is selling me the parts that make the most horsepower for my application. I trust that my supplier is not selling me that parts that only make the most profit for them. I believe that this is the way most of us folks have to operate. We just don't have the ability to test the stuff ourselves and do meaningful comparisons. Just my thoughts.....

If your looking for a good intake you should check out the www.macperformance.com CAI. I had one on my previous F150 w/4.6 and GT Mustang.

For the money this is the best value out there. You can get one @ www.partshopper.com or straight from MAC.

These are about $50 cheaper then the K&N, Airade, and Airforce one and look just as good as they come in Chrome. These are very easy to install and like most all MAC products are built very well.

I hope this helps....BTW this is the one I will be getting to go on my truck real soon, Unfortunatly most people over here @ F150online.com don't realize this brand exists because none of the sponsered vendors supply them!

BUT I'm hear to educate the masses!

Hmmm... not a bad price on the MAC... Still seems like a lot of money for a filter and a piece of tubing... and I can't say that I can see any difference in that one, and the $50 ebay ones... and since I'm on a roll hear, I really don't care for the chrome tube. There's nothing else under my hood that's chrome, so it just sticks out like a sore thumb, and I kinda like subtle... Sorry, don't mean to complain. As far as intakes go that is a good price... if/when I get one, I'll will probably look into coating the chrome with something black... Thinking about maybe using the elbow from the stock intake somehow to cover some of the chrome... don't know, just thinking out loud or online or something...

It costs over 100.00 to dyno a vehicle. Is it worth it to confirm a 10-12 hp increase?
For about $20.00 you can go all day at the strip and see real life if you made the right choice. Countless hundreds of people have posted gains by installing an Aftermarket air intake system. Logic dictates that it will increase the air flow because it is less restrictive.

Just thought maybe someone on here might have a shop with a dyno... I'm just curious what the actual numbers are... I know it's an improvement, but I have no desire to take my truck to a strip,I'll just wait till Dad gets the dyno in his shop, and play with it there...

Was also curious if anyone had any numbers on the cheap intake setups before I made a purchase...

Thanks for the input though...

When your father gets his dyno in his shop, then I assume that you will be able to runs tests for free. It would be rather telling if you were able to runs tests on your stock engine on different days under different conditions. Some folks here on the boards here would be interested in seeing just how much hp varies on your truck.

Closer9....You lucky Duck! Wish my pops had a Dyno!

If it's black your wanting then I would say go with this one from Western Motor Sports.....I had this unit on my 01 Cobra and liked it better than the MAC unit PLUS it's about $50 cheaper! I actually had forgotten about the WMS Velocity tube.....I wasn't sure if they made these for the Trucks....Guess they do!

Check this one out http://www.wmsracing.com/wmsweb/tubes.htm

Good Luck,

Adam

Hey, Adam, now we're talking! That's what I'm looking for. Seems like a more reasonable price for a product I much prefer... I will definately take more time later, and read up on that one. It just might be the one for me...

As for the dyno, as it is now, I should be able to use it occasionally free of charge, but seeing as Dad is 3-1/2 hours away it won't be something I can do all the time... although, I often wish I could find a job over his way... and yes, that does make me one lucky guy, especially since there's a full car wash just a few bays down from where the dyno will be...

In looking at air velocity at the throttle body and most of the popular intakes are straight tube. I would think that a funneling effect going into the throttle body would improve bottom end acceleration by increasing air velocity. The only intake I know of that has this is the Iceman. I think even the design of the stock intake has somewhat of a taper towards the outlet of the tube to help increase the speed of the air through the TB when the butterfly opens. I am not sure how the Iceman performs at mid to top end though.

There's another website that sells these for about 150+shipping...just can't locate it right now.
