Question Supercharged V-8 -VS- V-10 power???

I was wondering what the out-come would be if we compared a superchaged V-8 and a V-10 on power output and fuel mileage. Say, I put a Kenne Bell or a Pro-Charger and the usual mods on my '97 thru '00 Extended Cab V-8. Who do you believe would kick butt on power, pulling a trailer, and or get the best fuel mileage?

I'm thinking of a trailer in the amount of around 5,000 lbs.

Let the games begin

No one? You mean to tell me that as much as some of you guys and girls compete back and forth on other subjects, there is no one on this subject?

The V8 will come out ahead because of the weight advantage. If you put the V10 in an F-150, the front will need to have better springs stiffer frame 4R100 tranny possible bigger differential. If and when my 4.6 blows up I will replace it with either a 5.4 or the 6.8.

My personal truck is a 4.6L, but the rental that I have is a 5.4L 4X4 Supercrew. The 5.4 seems to have a noticeable increase in power. I may be getting a newer (@ a '99) with a 5.4L. The fuel mileage between the two are pretty close, but since I'm a Gear Head, I want to have even more power! But I just don't believe that you will ever be able to make a V-10 get any descent fuel mileage. Any thoughts?

6.8 litres vs 5.4 sucking gasoline. The 5.4 will always be cheaper on gas. The 6.8 doesn't have the PI heads so the power potential is limited.

In 1999 Ford introduced a better flowing head for the Modular engines. It was used on the Mustangs and 5.4 engines and in 2001 it was used on the 4.6 truck engine. It had bigger valves and a smaller Combustion Chamber.

Well let'see here:

supercharged 5.4 L = Lightning:
380 HP@ 4750 RPM
450 ft lbs torque @ 3250 rpm

V10 = SuperDuty:
310 HP @ 4250 RPM
425 ft lbs torque @ 3250 RPM

looks like the edge goes to the supercharged 5.4 L
now if you want to talk gas mileage, I expect the V10 would take that category - the 5.4L V8 typically gets 1-2 mpg better mileage under normal conditions. Adding on the drag from the blower, I think it would drag the mileage below the V10s.
Both engines would requires the 4R100 tranny.

5.4 L (natually aspirated):
255 HP @ 4500 RPM
350 ft lbs torque @ 2500 RPM

Cool

HI!... The 5.4L from "99" and up has 260H.P not 255H.P.

I have a 5.4 that is heavily modded and making about 345H.P/425FT/LBS of TQ in N/A trim. I also have 4.10 gears and still get 23.2MPG on the highway. If I towed against a stock v-10 I would out pull it, out 1/4 mile it, out handle it and out MPG it. You don't need a supercharger to make these 5.4's rip. I'm a perfect example of that.

Neal, THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT Just think if you throw a blower on your combo, how much power you would be putting out! I'm a firm believer that you can never have too much power!
Have done any towing with your truck? If so, how much weight? I primarily want the power for pulling. But that kind of gas mileage is very appealing to me also.

Great job.

Neal,
Did, by chance, you have your chip programmed for the 4.10 gears? If so, did you check the accuracy? You see where I'm going with this. 23 MPG is pretty hard to believe especially with the way you drive. I've got a custom programmed Superchip for my blower and shorter tires and I've checked and the speedometer is not right. Just a thought.

2000regcab54, How do like your supercharger? I haven't heard to much about that one. Could you give me before and after performance and mpg gains? I would appreciate it.

HI!... '90 SSC Clone : Well I currently have a set of fully worked FOX LAKE heads with CROWER cams that will be going on my 5.4 in a while, so I'm hoping to hit 400H.P (flywheel).

Yes I have towed with my truck when it was only making about 300-315H.P. I was towing a heavy car trailer weighing in at about 3000LBS and on the trailer was the rolling chassis of my "83" PRO STREET FORD RANGER drag truck weighing in at about 1800LBS without engine and trans. So it was about 4800LBS. At a red light a kid in a 5-speed DAKOTA with the MAGNUM V-6 tried to race me and he lost by half a truck length. Needless to say he was pissed.

HI!... 2000regcab54 : Yes I had my SUPERCHIP re-calibrated for my 4.10 gears 2 years ago by MIKE TROYER. It's within 0.2 KM accuracy. So in other words if I was doing 99.8MPH my speedo would be readinf 100MPH.

When I went on that 546KM trip my mother was in her ESCORT in front of me and when we arrived she only had 2 more KMS (548) than me on her odometer. So trust me, my odometer is pretty much dead nuts on.
