My son was putting the battery in his truck and he put on the cables in the wrong order, eventhough I explained it to him. Smoke came from the engine bay after he did this, what caused the smoke and did it effect anything else besides the battery?
What year/model truck? The alternator/voltage regulator becaues it is always connected to the battery regardless of the ignition switch position. The PCM might have been damaged. Plug it back in the correct way and see if the truck starts.

Well, first off -
How about some info on the truck, such as year, engine type, etc.
Maybe follow that up with a description of any burned devices under the hood, as well as any other pertinent info.
Off hand, I'd say you could have smoked the diodes in the alternator; burned a fusible link in the harness, etc.
Anyway, you got a response based on what you posted.
Post more info and I'm sure you'll get more responses.

Replace the battery your son fried, start it up, and see what you've got... If everything looks and feels normal, you got lucky. If not, report the results of where your at at that point to see where to go from there.
Confusius say, smoke bad, something fried, could be many things. Maybe a fused or fusible link, maybe a cable. If he got off this easy he got lucky. Unless it remained connected for an extended period of time, it probably didn't fry the battery. However it surely got something else. I don't think anyone was ignoring your question, it's just that without seeing what happened it's tough to give you any reliable response.
