gas mileage... 17.2 mpg hwy... any comparisons?

Seems no matter what you post for mileage someone seems to get better. Well, not me. I'm not complaining about 14 city and 16.5 interstate. If I had wanted good gas mileage I would have bought a METRO. I needed a TRUCK. Actually I think the mileage is very good considering it is a 5k lb, 4 wheel drive, honest to God V8 equiped full size truck. Try the mileage out on a DOG(Dodge) compareable equiped truck. Two words- Single-Degit

I got 16.7 the only time I checked my hwy mileage. That was at about 75 with some mountains. 97 4.6 auto 4x4 reg cab flarside 3.55ls. I get about 13 most of the time going to and from work with some city traffic. About half the trip to work is around 40mph with a small hill and the rest is about 55mph on level road. The 13 also includes some city driving around 30mph with lots of traffic lights.

Today I drove 640 miles from Dayton, OH to Topeka, KS on my way to Colorado Springs, CO. I'm delivering my son's 2002 KR Screw with a 5.4. I drove the first 200 miles without the A/C and got 18.2. Once I got through IL to St. Louis, the speed limit went from 65 to 70 and I had to get the A/C on. The mileage went down to 16.8. It's pretty much what I expected. The truck is running great and is really comfortable. Great seats for a long drive.
I recently took a 625 mile trip in flat florida. 2001 supercrew, 5.4, 45K, with an ARE MX cap, K&N air filter and Mobil 1 10W-30. I think the kicker was that I travelled between 65 and 70 mph off interstates. My best mileage was 18.8 with an average of 18.

15 - 16 mpg
Everything stock with no load, a light driving foot, and a/c on at least half the time. Also, it's 80% freeway driving (75mph) to Los Angeles with light traffic everyday. Not as high as I'd like, but definately not complaining given the driving circumstances.
You guys think it would go up by 2mpg once I install the homemade K&N, tonneau cover, and Magnaflow catback?

5.4L mileage
'01 5.4L SCab, 4x2, 3.55 LSD, Sport with 285-60/17 tires.
All time hwy best 19.2 MPG, Durango Colorado to Flagstaff Arizona, pretty flat, 60 MPH cruise control, A/C off and light load.
High 15's, low 16's mixed around town & to/from work.
All time worst was in the 14's, I-15 Las Vegas to Salina Utah, all uphill into a strong headwind during light snow, 70 MPH.
I find 20 MPG claims for 5.4L a bit hard to believe unless on thin tires and a strong tailwind. Or maybe drafting a semi.
Heck, unless you use one of those calibrated reservoirs the EPA uses, there's enough variability in the refill between two different pumps that you prolly can't measure within 5 to 10 % anyway. I think that if I keep pushing it, I can generally get another 2 gallons into the tank after first click. That's almost 10% variability right there unless you overfill it to spillage both times.

I've suspected for a while that the added weight of the 4X4 costs us a few MPG. At best, even with a manual trans., I get 15-16MPG. At worst (with a decent size load or in hours of heavy traffic) I get anywhere from 11-13. I'm pretty light on the gas pedal, too. I'm also convinced that where you live makes a big difference. During the winter time up in Massachusetts, my fuel efficiency drops a bit.
