diesel replacement engine

how can you put a diesel in for a replacement motor as opposed to replacing the same 5.4 engine you had when it wears out? where would you find them? what would be needed to do it? tranny, or tranny adaptors,, what other issues would i want to look at,, when my 5.4 wears out, i want the power and mpg of diesel when i finally do replace the engine

If this is a F150, you would probably have to replace the entire driveline(engine, trans, rear end). The suspension probably would not handle the extra weight. The entire fuel system would have to be replaced. The majority of the electrical system wouldn't be compatable.

The easiest solution: Buy a truck with a diesel engine already in it

sorrry man, but buying a truck with a diesel in it would prob be a lot cheaper than a conversion. i have seen pre 99 f250's with a cummins 5.9 conversion--very expensive and still not the performance of the PSD. i don't think the engine compartment of an f150 is large enough for a power stroke. also an additional battery(most diesels have 2), larger radiator/intercoller...

It can be done and wouldn't be that bad. Cummins make a 4 cylinder diesel (4bt) that a lot of people repower their trucks and jeeps with. It is a mechanical motor so the wiring would be basic. Yes you would need a tranny to put behind it. The suspension would hold it as well. Do a search on the internet as they are readily available. If you wanted to do a larger conversion you would have to buy a 250 or larger as the powerstroke and cummins motors are too heavy for an 150 suspension.

I helped a friend put an Isuzu 4 cyl. in a 78 Bronco in the late 80's. He had rebuilt the sb 400 once already and was getting tired of 8 MPG. The Isuzu had poor exceleration (75mph in 1/4) but it could pull just about anything you hooked to it. It also got about 20 mpg. He ran the setup til last year when he bought a new F250 Crew Diesel 4x4.

He purchased the engine/transmission/transfercase from a truck engine repair service center. It came as a kit to be fitted into a full sized p/u. It was entirely bolt in, it even came with an instrument cluster that needed to be mounted under the dash and a cleaning kit for the fuel tank and a fuel pump.

It has been done but it was expensive.
