Question door rust

I have a 2000 Ford F-150 and after looking at some other ones on a dealers lot i noticed on a 2000 like mine that it had rust on the bottom of the door on the inside. This really bothers me because after looking at mine ive noticed it is starting to rust too. What can a guy do for this. I wash it on a regular basis and it is always kept clean. Would it be wise to use a wire brush and remove the rust and then spray some undercoating over it or something so it covers the bottom area of the door. Would this prevent it from rusting anymore? I would like some input!

I bought a '00 F-150 in December of '99 and the bottom of the doors and tailgate were rusting by July of '00. The dealers body shop cleaned out the rust and repainted, but the rust was back in a few months. Ford gave the okay to re-skin the doors and tailgate, but I bought an '01 instead. I wasn't willing to go without a truck for however long it was going to take to do the repair and I don't like driving "damaged goods".

My '01 and '02 haven't had a problem with rusting...yet.

I'll bet that there are a lot more '02's out there that have rust on their door bottoms, but they probably are a darker color which makes the rust hard to see.

My 2000 scab is just about out of warenty, i took it to the dealer for rust on the front bumper. They said "no problem, well just replace it."

Rust should be covered under warranty for a 2000. Have em replace it.

I'm not sure of what you want to hear. The rust is coming from the seam where the outside door-skin is welded to the inside of the door, probably because of a design flaw. If you go to the "General Care" or "Other Body" forums and do a search, you may get more info. If it were my truck, I would take it to the dealers body shop and raise hell about a new truck rusting, but they're going to take one look at it and tell you that they've never seen an F-150 rust in that area (been there done that).

The $3000 Cash-Back Rebates are looking pretty good for an '03.

My 2000 had rust on the bottom seam on the driver's side door, the Gibson muffler was starting to go and there were small cracks around the bead area on all 4 tires. The 4.6L engine was OK but I felt it or the tranny would go with the amount of towing I want to do. Just to much stress in the rocky terrain of the Canadian Shield of Northwestern Ontario between Toronto and Kenora.

When I arrived at the cottage in Kenora, I just traded it in for a 2003 7700. Love the 5.4L, the 4R100 and the LS 3.73! Pulls real nice with better gas mileage to boot and it's not completly broken in yet.

The passenger's side was in perfect shape! Go figure! Bad steel maybe? The truck was oiled every year but that didn't help the driver's side.

I think there's a rust warrenty. Check it out!

I have rust too!

I have a 99 navigator with the SAME problem and they turned me down for the same reasons...they said because it had not rusted thru the corrosion warranty wouldnt cover it. My warranty expires in 2 months and they know that...so I guess they think they're rid of me.

From what Ive read this is a widespread problem on some of Ford's big trucks from 98-2001.

Its clearly a FORD defect. Im looking into this matter a little more.

Anyone out there want to get a petition? Im in Louisville Kentucky.

Yeah, my 97 is doing the same. A little bit of rust right under the third door, on the inside. I think I remember reading a TSB on it one time, like way back in the day, said that the place where the doors are rusting is where any moisture collects. What stops this completely? I'd like a permanent fix.

I had a '92 f150 , the door bottoms started to rust in '95
I just wire brushed the rust, primed and repainted the area
then sprayed them with prenatrating under coating, then sprayed it again every year or two. I sold the truck in 2003 the rust never came back.

Thumbs down

Discovered my rust 2 years ago and was under extended warranty at the time. The dealer took digital photos and supposedly emailed them to Ford. Ford supposedly wrote back and said no dice, so sorry, tough crap. You outta wruck. Well, the rust seems to have leveled off and is not getting worse. Not happy but atleast they fixed my door cracks.

There is a seperate corrosion warranty I think its 5 yrs.

Here it is:

Five (5) years/unlimited mileage, whichever comes first
Body sheet metal panels against corrosion due to a defect in factory-supplied materials or workmanship. This coverage applies only if the corrosion causes perforation (holes) in body sheet metal panels
