Question 5.4 vs Lightning

Just curious if any of you 5.4 guys out there with mods have ran against any lightnings and what your results where?
I am just curious as what it will take to be able to run with a dual overhead cam supered motor, if its even possible.
HOpe to hear some good results-
thnaks

Unmodded the '99 Lightning was 2.5 seconds and 15mph faster in the quarter mile than my truck. I'm afraid a Supercrew would be at even more disadvantage.

Neal has been pecking away at the difference for four years now.

THanks for the post. That is good to know, you would think that on your truck with some under drive pulleys, chip , exhaust and some gears and you got him. So 2g's later you can beat an L. well a 99 L, I still have yet to hear the new stats with the 24v 5.4 in those things-

2g's isnt even the beginning. Beating a stock lightning in a supercrew 5.4 will take alot of work. My guess is if you do much of your own work you might be able to pull it off with 10-12 g's. But your gonna have to supercharge. In N/A mode itll be even more. I'm not sure exactly how much neal has spent, but im sure its way up there.

Well that was my assumption before your first post.
But if you are 2.5 off form a 99 then the mods I posted should get you there.
Now I do agree that it woudl prob be more like 10k to get you up against a new L, but you woudl pretty much have an L motor in the end.
I am pretty much looking for any and all modded 5.4's to see what all they have done to their motors and how those mods can keep up with an L-

Why not look up the numbers for a HD F150. I think they have the same engine as the L and it's a supercrew. I'm sure the HD is slower with the extra weight. To be honest with you, you will probably need the horsepower of an L plus 50 or 60 HP just to keep up. Good luck in your quest though.

Just a couple of tidbits:

The L's are SOHC

The HD's have 340 hp vs. 380 hp for the L's

The new L's run mid-high 13 second ET's...Knocking 3 or more seconds off your ET will take much more than a chip, exhaust, gears and some pulleys. The L's have the lightest body style possible, 2wd, short bed, reg cab and additionally have lower suspension to reduce wind resistance so competing with an L with a heavier, taller truck would probably take at least 400 hp, in addition to some gearing and transmission work. It's definitely no small task and certainly won't be kind to your wallet.

If they would let me order the Pursuit from Australia I think I could beat a Lighyning. 32 valve dual overhead cam 5.4 with 388 HP and is more areodynamic and Lighter

I'm running with a Kenne Bell supercharger on my 2001 Supercrew 4x4 5.4L, boost is at 10# at the track, 8# on the street. My 60' launch (1.97 seconds) at the drag strip was better then many modified Lightning - on almost bald original Goodyear Wrangler tires. The truck weight is about 5500 lbs. too. I bet I could easily take a stock lightning any day of the week. The cost of my mods are below 5K too. I'm putting on a 90mm Lightning Mass Air Flow sensor tomorrow and a multi-position chip from FordChip. One side will be for towing and the other side for the track. I expect a drop in my ETs. At the track I've beat Mustang GTs, Camaros, Impala SS, Corvette (newer), etc. Got beat by a Ford Ranger though, he was running a turbo charger.

Just get a Navigator motor(32V 5.4). Get it built up and drop it in.

Almost forgot to put a small shot of giggle gas on there. I wouldn't do any more than a 75 shot. That should put you over a L and would still be N/A.

Tundra,

My best time so far on an 1/8 track, 9.13 seconds (that's with a .907 reaction time) with Goodyear tires spinning. Last week I put a set of Kumho ECSTA STX 275/70HR16 tires on that grip much better and today I put a 90mm Lightning MAF and multi-postion FordChip in. This new set-up should put my times down significantly. I'll let you know what my new times are within the next two-three weeks - only been to the track twice so far.

There is a reason the sticker on the Lightnings at the dealerships say $34K. SVT has done all the work already. I think it would be $44K+ to get a heavier truck to match the power of a Lighnting. Is it worth it? Not to me. I think I'll get a Lighnting and try to make it faster than other vehicles that cost a lot more. For now I guess I'll just have to get used to the tail gate of the Lightning
