Unhappy Harmonic Balancer

Why does a harmonic balancer go bad? How much should it cost to repair? This is a weird story. My truck was hit in the rear while parked. I drove it for a week prior to putting it in the body shop. It was running fine when I put it in, a week later, when the body work was complete, I jumped in and started it up and it felt as if the motor was going to fall out. The guys in the shop said it was like that when they got it. My truck was fine upon enterring the shop. The insurance company is saying this issue is not wreck related and they will not pay for the repair. The body shop says I must now pay to have it checked out and pay for the repair. My truck's history. '94 F-150, 175,000 miles, extremely well maintained, oil changed every 3000 miles since new. Is this just a fluke or am I missing something that could have happened while in the shop. They want me to pay $300.00 to fix the harmonic balancer. Thanks for any and all replies.....bmcgullam2@juno.com

You can get one for 100 bucks and take the 15 minutes to put it on yourself.
While your at it put a new front seal in there.
