Check Engine Light is on blinking

I bought a 1998 F-150. It has a 4.6 L triton v-8 with 78,000 miles. My check engine light started coming on and going of every so often. Yesterday it started blinking and the engine skipped or misfired. Please make any recommedations on the repair procedure. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Not sure about your exact situation but i've always heard that if the check engine light comes on and stays on, then get it checked out as soon as you can. If it comes on and starts blinking, stop where you are and have it towed somewhere because it is something serious.

My recent experience with the check engine light blinking was due to a misfiring cylinder. The thing had a small rock work its way down the plug boot and caused a plug to misfire. Of course it runs rough will a missing cylinder.

The blinking CEL is an indication of a Misfire. You need to get the DTC scanned to find out what is going on with it ( i.e. which cylinder ) to start to fix it.

There are a few DIY scanners. I have a Actron and the MicroTuner. As well as there are a few brand X scanners from the likes of Harbor Freight ( watch that you get an ODB II scanner, not a previous years scanner ).

The other option is AutoZone usually scans codes for free and if you do this, get the actual DTC number, not the 2 lines description the guy will try to give you.

Get Code(s) and post them back here. You can try a search on them if you'd like to see what others have done.

What ever you do, don't buy the O2 sensors that they usually tell people are bad, when they scan it.

Good luck, let us know what it is.
