Break-in period?

well, I'm going to have to break-in another brand new Ford engine, if all goes well.

I've decided on Mobil 1 5W-30, but when should I change the factor break-in fluid? It's going to be a 4.6L engine. Is 1000 miles excessive?

When would you all do the first oil change on a brand new engine?

im insane, so i would do 50,1000, 3000 and every 3000 after, but thats just me.

50, just to get any major shavings out of there if there is some
1000, because its a new truck and i HAVE to do something to it
3000, because thats just about right, and i can keep track of it well afterwards.

Grinomyte-

The drive home from the dealer is at least 70 miles, so maybe I'll change the break-in fluid at 500. Then I'll change it at 1000 miles , then at 3,000 miles and change the Mobil 1 every 3,000 miles since I'm used to running Red Line at 5000 mile intervals.

I'm going crazy!!! YEAH!!~WAHOEY!!!YOYOYO DUHDUH EHAW!!

I agree you can never be too careful with fluid changes!

Original (dino) oil would be changed at 300 miles on the clock. Replaced with dino oil.

2nd oil change at 2,000 miles on the clock(dino oil again)

3rd oil change at 5,000 miles on the clock (Mobil 1 Synth) with Motorcraft filter.

Change oil at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, ...
...200, 205, 210 thousand miles each time with a Motorcraft filter and Mobil 1 synth.

Good Luck,

Bill

Thanks for the wishes. I think anything will be better than a leaky 19,000 mile 2-year-old truck. Plus, it's time for a change. 260 HP and 302 ft.lbs. of TQ without modding seems like a nice change.
I think I'm going to keep her stock.

Just a matter of finding one that I like and getting all the financing stuff out of the way with the trade in.

Keep truckin'

What wmcnally posted is probably the closest to what I would do.

My dealer always tells me to bring the truck in at 500 miles for a free oil and filter change. Then we go with every 6 month or 5,000 mile oil changes. Haven't ever had a Ford engine fail yet.

Personally, I really don't see the need. If the filter is working properly, there's no reason for an early oil change. Any ferous metals would either be caught in the filter of on the oil plug magnet.

BTW, does the oil plug have a magnet? The dealer does all my oil changes so I've never seen the plug.

there's more potential for there to be alot of metal in a unbroken in engine,so the filter could get stopped up easily, then the filter will be bypassed and all the rest of the metal goes straight into the engine

I do my first oil changes at 1000 miles, then at 5000 miles and then every 5000 miles thereafter. I use Mobil 1 in the F150 and do it myself, and let the dealer do it using Motorcraft in the Mustang as I can fit under the F150 a lot easier.

The GT Mustang is a boot to drive and the F150 is great too with the 5.4. The Best of Two Worlds!
