why do you think it is going out?
hope this helps even though its on a 91

because my truck will buck when i give it gas, it usually does it when the trans is in tourqe lock up...when you give it a nudge of gas it will buck on you, some times when im getting on a onramp and give it gas i get no response until i work the pedel...some one in here told me it might be the sensor.

I'd check it first! No sense replacing something thats not broke.

On my 97 4.6 it is on the drivers side of the throttle body. It has a three wire plug on it.

With a digital multi-meter, back probe the center wire. With the key on, you should have right around .900 volts. It may be closer to .980 or that range. If that is o.k. the next thing to do is slowly move the throttle plate until you have it all the way open. The voltage should climb smoothly to around 5.0 volts. If there are no big jumps in the voltage, thats probably not your problem. When they go bad they usually have a dead spot where the voltage stays steady for a noticable amount of throttle plate travel.

Good luck

Rob

if you do have a bad throttle position sensor, get it the hell out of there ASAP if you have an automatic transmission. a bad sensor can cause your automatic to slip and destroy the transmission.

How does it shift? Is it smooth shifting or does it slam the gears?

I agree with Fieldthis you should check it out first, or bring it to someone to get checked out as soon as possiable.
If it is the tbs sensor going out you need to get it replace before you screw the tranny. Just like acadiabob posted.

1st gear has always shifted real hard into second, from 2nd to 3rd and up is very smooth....I am now experiencing an engine miss whe i get on it. I noticed it coming back from lunch, definalty a miss of some kind, HMMM, maybe spark plugs, they have the originals in it at 110,000 miles...but the bucking is a different issue....Ill take your advice and test the tsp tonight, hopefully those readings you gave me will apply to my truck and year.

Just double checked what I gave you. It does apply to your truck, but the max voltage should be 4.8v, not 5.0v that i said in my earlier post.

This info can be found at:

http://www.cybrrpartspro.com/Manual%...delLookup.html

Punch in the year and model and it brings up the manuals that are available online. Look under Driveability and Emmision controls, then go under electronic engine controls.

Its easier to get to if you take the air intake hoses off.

i tested the tsp, idle amps at .97 and WOT at 4.76, seems to be in specs. I still have no CEL coming on and now im developing a miss when im in the throttle, hesitation and what not, can still get it to speed wuikly but its reallly missing a little....It might be spark plug related, I had washed the engine about a moth ago, aafter i washed it it ran like crap unitl the next day....now its kinda doing the same thing only this time i didnt wash the engine, I may have an intermitent fouling of a plug or maybe they just need replacing since they have 110.000 miles on them....I guess ill try that this weekend...looks like a big job to change those plugs though.

DONT WAIT TILL 100.000 or more to change plugs

I am sure i eliminated my bucking and hesitating problems in my 4.6 I changed the spark plugs last nite, the engine had 110.000 miles on them. WOW they were gonso...the gap on all the plugs were about .90, just waisted....so, put new ones in, look out im gonna sprput wings and fly..runs like new....no more missing and the bucking tranny or whatever it was is no boticible since i put the plugs in...i hope it had something to do with those plugs...i dont even see how the truck ran. my guess is that all my problems ight have been related to the plugs...I guess i find out in the next couple of day. It takes little effort to get the beast cruising now, very good throttle response. I will not wait till 100.000 miles again to change plugs, no matter what the manual says...ill let you know if the bucking is gone for sure....
