choosing the right computer reprogrammer

I have a 2000 Ford F 150 5.4 with KN Gen two kit Granatelli mass air flow JBA headers Bassani cat back.
I reasently wash the engine and that's when my problem stated
with the engine hesitaing and the engine light coming on. I took it to the dealer they said it was coil num 8 and plug both were changed costing $420.00 Three days later problem re-occured but now the problem was intermiten. I returned to the dealer another $320.00.
After spending a total of $740.00 the check engine light is still coming on, I'm looking to send some letters and make phone calls I'm also thinking of buing a computer reprogrammer to reads codes myself like Granatelli, hypertec or superchips.

You don't need a computer reprogrammer to read your codes. Any OBD2 reader will do the job. Of course a Superchips Microtuner has the added benefit of giving extra performance if you decide to flash your ECM. I have to say that 420 bucks to change a coil and plug sounds like you must have a very sore back side.

That's highway robbery! Can't believe they would charge so much for replacing a coil. There easy to change as I have discovered! I to have been fleeced by the Dealer!!

As pjf77 said, all you need is an OBDII decoder which is an accessory to the Microtuner but you can buy them for apx. $130usd or go to, is it Auto Zone, and they will read it for free. You could check the coils manually by running the engine and unpluging the coils 1 by 1 until you find the one that doesn't make a difference. You then disconnect the Neg battery terminal for 10-15 mins to get rid of the CEL. With an OBDII decoder you can easily clear the CEL.

Get the Superchips Microtuner #1715 as it has the OBDII reader built in. I believe it is the only one on the market with this feature. I have a Superchip and there is a difference!! It's worth the money!

Check out http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi...ory=Superchips for more info. There's lots of other neat toys on the site and you'll get lots of support as well.

Actually, if you want even more info on Superchips, go to the Computer section on this board and check out some of the threads. Or, while your there, direct your queations to Mike Troyer and he will be glad to help you.
