Is the engine cool when you wash it?

Seems like water may be getting down in the plug well and then the plugs are cracking when they start getting warm or start arcing. Keep an eye and don't spray water anywhere where it could drip don into the plug wells, if they don't crack, they will certainly foul out before long (if they have water in them). The plug wires could shrink, but I wouldn't think this is the problem, because I don't think they would shrink enough to crack the plugs. Good luck!

stx98,

Make sure your plug wires are properly installed. Pay special attention to the plug boot. If it is not properly seated on the plug it will not seal in the plug well. If it is turned the wrong way, they are cut on an angle, it will not seal in the plug well.

Regards

I have Denso Iridium plugs. My truck has COP, Coil on Plug, ignition so the only system to use is OEM. The factory plug wires are a sure fit. Some aftermarket wire sets do not seat on the spark plug properly and they come off and this exposes the well to the elements. Get water in there and all kinds of nasty things can happen.

stx98,

No water should be getting into the plug wells. The spark plug boot serves 2 purposes. 1st it makes the electrical connection to the plug and 2nd it seals the spark plug well. The wires should only be changed when they become damaged or fail to properly conduct the electricity to the plugs. A cheap test is to spray water from a spray bottle onto the wires at night and check for sparks. If you see sparks then change the wires. Often times improper removal technique stretches the wires and the core brakes. This leads to arcing of the wires.

If your wires are properly installed and they make a perfect seal in the well you should not have any water intrusion in the plug wells. I have heard of rare instances of a casting flaw that allowed coolant to seep through the head and accumulate in the plug well. Do you have water or coolant in the plug wells? Do you power wash the engine?
