Here is the deal. A friend of mine, misguided at that, owns either a 98 or maybe 01 Chevy truck. He tells me it has a 289 with standard 350hp. I am like WTF is this guy talking about. I have the 4.2 which is a displacement of 256 that has approx 205hp, and the 4.6 which is a displacement of 281 and only has about 10 - 15 more hp then mine, so approx 215 - 220hp.

Now I must admit I am no expert on motors and hp but how the hell can a Chevy 289, stock motor have 350hp? I don't believe it for a minute, I don't think it has 250hp, but maybe it does. However, before I tell this guy that he has been smoking something with his 350hp 289 Chevy I wanted to ask you experts if you know what it actually has so that I am WELL informed...

Oh, and no it does not have any blower or any modifications on it, it is a stock Chevy truck.

 

I found some information but not sure which motor is the 289.

The listed horsepower is:


V8 motors

Vortec 4800 - 270hp
Vortec 5300 - 285hp
Vortec 6000 - 300hp
Big block vortec 8100 - 340hp

I am thinking the 4800 is the 289???

Anyhow, even if he had the big block it is still not 350hp.

Chevy owners must sit around at home to much coming up with numbers for their motors as they sit in the shop...

 

HI!... 1st off your friend does'nt know what he's talking about. A 289c.i is a FORD engine. It was only made from "63" - "68", unless CHEVY's 4.8L v-8 figures out to be a 289 cubic inches. I'm too tired to figure it out lol! CHEVY trucks only had 305c.i or 350c.i small block engines in the 80's and mid 90's. The VORTEC 350 made about 255H.P and the non VORTEC 350's made about 221H.P I believe. If he's got one of the newer CHEVY trucks it will have a 4.8 or a 5.3 v8. I beleive they were rated at 270H.P and 290H.P. This is just hearsay on the newer years engines. I'm a die hard FORD man not a just kill me I drive a CHEVY man. lol!

Thanks, I am pretty sure it is the Vortec 4800 that is rated at 270hp. I knew he was blowing smoke, but wanted the information to back up what I say tomorrow.

The guy is always talking chit. He said its the small Chevy motor but amazing how the small Chevy motor puts out 350hp. I said that is freaking amazing and asked how many stickers it took to get to 350hp...

 

Just to add to the Chews heads eats valves yearly trashing, tonight...actually last night (HAHA, I've been up all night. It's summer and 98*F in SF AMAZING!!!) my friend beat a Z-28 with his 93 5.0 Mustang and with 3 people in his car. Chalk another one up for the Fords!We were a car-length ahead of him off the line. My friend chirpped from 1st to 2nd and the Chevy was left in the dust. The Chevy driver didn't take it so well!

I don't know how this relates to the thread, but it made me laugh at the proverbial "tough-guy" chevy driver persona.

I like the little 289-302 Ford motors. The 260 was a little sweetheart as well.
