Has anybody ported their heads???
HI!... Just by porting the 5.4 "P.I" heads alone doesn't do much. Mabey 15H.P increase. To really make these heads (2 valve) flow you need to get CNC porting, stage 2 polishing job, larger valvers (FERREA valves, sodium filled) 3 or 5 angle valve job, stiffer "BEE HIVE" valve springs and the most important to make all these mods mean something.... larger lift cams (CROWER stage 2). I just arranged this set-up through MIKE T and it will cost you at least $2600(u.s). Expected H.P in return is around the 80H.P (flywheel) number on a stock 5.4. If you go to the much larger 0.600 + lift cams you can get close to 100H.P (flywheel) but you have to rev the 5.4 engine above 6500RPM and the 5.4's stock rods will not handle much more than 6000RPM. So that option is left up to the built block (after market rods) 5.4 guys.
while i dont doubt what neal is saying, porting the modular head is "trickey" because the modular head is so different than any other ford head before, a guy who is the best at porting 5.0 heads might not be up to to the task of the modular head. couple of thing that i have observed that might make you think is this:
pick up any mustang magazine and see #1, how many are saling ported modular heads 2 maybe 3, #2 there are some really fast mustang with blowers, stock heads and cams, i am talking 9 second 4v heads.
next notice on the lightning forum that ported heads and cams are not the hot ticket and there are some guys spending crazy money. alot of the big cam companys are not offering street performace cams yet and the mudular has been around in trucks since 97 and cars since 92 or 93, (maybe no market, or they have not found the magic lift and duration for the 2v head)
the 4v navigator engine makes 40 more hp than a 2v but gives up torque.
2600 for heads and cams, now consider that what intake are you going to put with it that will allow the heads and cams do there thing, dont forget a good exhaust and header(Neal has that covered)
remeber that when the 5.0 mustang got hot in 87 it took about 3 year for the aftermarket to start turning some good heads, people were porting stock heads with some success but when the aftermarker start making heads, it made the ported stock ones good boat ancors.
one last thing, with big heads and cams, will that require a convertor change to tak advantage of the new power curve, new chip and dyno tune and possibly a high rear end? you could drop $6k on this real quick and end up with something about as fast as a supercharged engine. or the new 3v eangine comes out and with the the major bolt ons has as much or more power than your 2v.
has anyone seen any dyno testing on stock vs. ported heads? i have not.

The modular head isn't that different than a pushrod head other than the lack of pushrods and the cam is on the head. Of course the mod engine will have its own characteristics in porting.
There are a many shops around who are doing these heads. Mainly because of the hot Ford mustang market. The 5.4 heads are the same as the 4.6 heads so you still benefit.
You can buy some that are already ported with cams. That would be easier. The work isn't any harder than on the older engines.
http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com these guy specialize in the mod heads, they're expensive.
http://www.powerheads.com They have a complete package of heads options.
http://foxlake.accrisoft.com/ Another big name in mustangs.
http://www.houstonperformance.com Another shop that does mod heads.
There are many more. These are the only ones off of the top of my head. Many of the big name mustang tuners do the modular heads.
If you want info on the modular heads one of the best places is the corral.net forums. They have a great tech forum for modular mustangs, but the info still applies to all modular heads. I've been able to get responses from Ford engineers once in awhile. And yes the flow data between stock and ported, and even the FRPP heads are out there . You just have to look.

stock is alum for one and steel for the other.
but other than that they are the same?
wonder why ford is going to the 3v?
