Knock sensor

Shouldn't the knock sensor retard the timing even when the engine is pinging due to EGR or MAF problems?

Will the knock sensor throw a code if it is not working?

The knock sensor is set up to reduce timing when the engine knocks/detonates, not when it pings. The two are not the same.

FYI

Detonation: Fuel charge firing or burning too violently, almost exploding.
Knocking: Condition accompanied by audible noise, that occurs when gasoline in cylinders burns too quickly. Also referred to as detonation.
Pinging: Metallic rattling sound produced by the engine during heavy acceleration when ignition timing is too far advanced for the grade of fuel being burned.

Thanks, but my 00 5.4 seems to ping on VP racing fuel as well as any pump gas. That is ping when it is being driven normally. Wide open throttle it devolops what no one could possibly not tell is detonation. If one don't believe pull the plugs they seem to have less life than the tank of gas. guess the best cure would be turn the radio up and wait for a hole to get burned in the piston.

EGR system is clean on this engine. Fresh plugs and nothing shows up for errors.

Just the most pinging detonating engine I have ever seen.
