I'd have to say, go with the 4.6L. It's dependable when not blowing out head gaskets (18,500 miles), but the 5.4 is worse for that very problem.

Being in CA you don't have many choices for engine replacement. You need to stay with oe size to keep smog current and be able to either register ( if you are in an area that requires regular smog checks) or to be able to sell the vehicle to someone that wants to register it of on road use. If you are going to use it for off highway use and it is not four wheel drive I would agree that the 4.6 will probably be a good choice. I would shop it around though. I have heard that the 4.6 in a crate is more expensive than the 5.4. You are also looking at getting a complete engine and finding intake manifold, throtle body and the electronics to run it. I would replace it with a 4.2 and then sell it and get a new truck with the engine you want. California is really tough when it comes to changing original equipment. They even have a problem with changing exhaust set ups and some other performance items.

How much $$ do you have to spend? You can rebuilt the existing 4.2. Find one in a bone yard. Buy a new one. Supercharge it. Easier than replacing with a 4.6.

If it were me.... I would shoehorn in a 6.8 V10.

If you replace the engine with a bigger one you will need the Engine Compartment Harness and the PCM along with the complete engine, including all the sensors.

You might want to check @ fordpartsonline.com first. I think they have a shortblock for around 1100.00 / 1200.00, Then use your heads, intake ETC. Might save you some cash!!!!

I recently had the same problem. My lower intake manifold gaskets were blown in the first cylinder. They were a mess. I decided to have a machine shop rebuild my engine for $1500 bucks. Runs great now.
