Unhappy Causes for Check Engine Light

My silly Check Engine Light is on. Last time it happened it was the sparkplug wires, but this time that ends seems fine.

I was just wondering what else could cause it? Could it be the Fuel Pump? How about the famous O2 Sensor? I just would like some idea; so when I take it in I'll at least have some clue as to what I am to expect.

Is there anything to check that would make one more likely over the other? Sheesh enough questions all ready!

Thanks All

Erik

You need to tell us what code it is setting. looking for the cause is so much easier.

Talking

Yep, I bet that would help.

I just ordered a diagnostic kit. It should be here soon. I guess I was a lot too vague.

Stay tuned . . .

Here is the code I got from the computer:

P0442

Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (Small Leak)

It's small, so I guess that is good. But what can I do to fix it? I cleared the code, should I just wait and see if it comes back?

What are the most common cuases for that code?

Thanks,

Erik

EVAP canister/valve, Fuel Tank Vent Valve - hose/pipe leak or blockage

Most common would be a loose/faulty fuel cap or filling the tank with the engine running. You may also check the filler neck to make sure the tube isn't cracked or loose.

What exactly was your truck doing when the engine light came one? I have a 2000 f150 and my engine light came on the other day and it would stumble a little bit and shake the car like a misfire. Any ideas!

I noticed the check engine light on the Highway. I was driving about 70 MPH.

But I noticed a bit of a stumble while stopped at a traffic light (not on the freeway ).

I reset the MIL, on Sunday and the light had not returned, but I had the stumble at the light this morning. I'll replace the gas cap, it seems like the easiest way to go. If that doesn't work, I'll start to look at the hoses.

Hope that helps,

Erik
